Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San

(Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi)

Sub-Category:

Pattern:

  • External Wind-Cold with internal turbid dampness

Actions:

  • Releases the exterior and resolves turbid dampness
  • Activates the Qi and harmonizes the Middle Jiao.

Indications:

  • Headache, chills and fever, aversion to cold, a sensation of oppression and fullness in the chest, nausea and vomiting, abdominal and epigastric pain, loss of appetite, loss of taste, diarrhea, borborygmus, flatulence

Possible Tongue Appearance:

  • Slightly pale tongue with a white and greasy coat

Possible Pulse Patterns:

  • Floating and tight pulse
  • Soggy and moderate pulse

Western Uses:

  • Influenza
  • Intestinal Flu
  • Non-specific Acute Colitis
  • Acute Gastroenteritis
  • Acute Diarrhea

Cautions, Contraindications, Herb Drug Interactions:

  • This formula is warm and drying, thus it should not be used in cases of Wind Heat with dampness or Yin deficiency with heat
  • This formula contains one or more toxic substances (while some Chinese herbs are toxic, it must be noted that many come prepared, or are combined, to mitigate their toxicity).

Preparation Notes:

  • Decoction. Usually cooked on high heat for approximately 10-20 minutes.
