What was Dai Mao (玳瑁, hawksbill turtle carapace) used for in Chinese medicine?
Dai Mao is the shell of the hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), a species assessed as Critically Endangered since 1996 and listed on the strictest appendix of the international endangered-species trade convention. International commercial trade in tortoiseshell is prohibited, and the material is not part of legitimate contemporary practice. What the classical literature recorded, in the past tense:
- Calmed the Liver and anchored the yang — as a heavy, salty, cold shell it was placed among the substances used for ascendant Liver yang, with dizziness, headache and irritability.
- Extinguished wind — it was described for convulsions and tremor arising from extreme heat stirring internal wind, especially in high fever.
- Cleared heat and resolved toxicity — recorded for heat-toxin patterns with delirium and for rashes and eruptions attributed to heat in the blood, which is why it appears in the emergency “open the orifices” formulas rather than in everyday prescriptions.

What is the dosage of Dai Mao (hawksbill turtle carapace)?
No dosage is published on this page, and none should be sought. Tortoiseshell from the hawksbill cannot be legally traded internationally, is not supplied by any legitimate herbal pharmacy, and is not used by qualified practitioners. Publishing a dose would imply the substance is obtainable and usable, which it is not.
Anyone studying the classical formulas that historically listed Dai Mao should learn them as they are actually made today. Is Dai Mao legal, and what is the conservation situation for the hawksbill turtle?
It is not legal to trade internationally, and the conservation situation is severe. The hawksbill has been assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN since 1996 and is listed on Appendix I of the international endangered-species trade convention, the category that prohibits commercial international trade. Tortoiseshell products remain widely available illegally in many countries.
- The tortoiseshell trade is one of the best-documented drivers of the decline. A 2019 analysis in Science Advances curated 150 years of tortoiseshell transactions and, using biologically informed harvest models, estimated that trade networks concentrated in Southeast Asia had taken about 9 million hawksbills — more than six times previous estimates. Those networks spread from the Pacific into the Indian and Atlantic basins and became markedly more complex after 1950.
- Poaching is current, not historical. Forensic work on tortoiseshell items confiscated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service recovered mitochondrial DNA from 56 seized objects, identifying multiple haplotypes including five not previously reported; all but one traced to Indo-Pacific genetic stocks. That research programme exists because the illegal trade is ongoing.
- Populations are geographically structured, so local harvest has regional consequences. Genetic work across the Indo-Pacific has defined distinct management units for the species, and molecular evidence has been used to show that harvesting shared foraging aggregations damages hawksbill populations well beyond the harvesting nation’s own waters.
- The species faces compounding non-trade pressures — nesting-beach loss and environmental contaminant burdens have both been documented in nesting populations, so trade pressure acts on an already-stressed species.
Traditional medicine is only one strand of the demand. The dominant historical driver of hawksbill exploitation was the decorative tortoiseshell trade in combs, jewellery and inlay, not medicine. We record that distinction because it is accurate, not to minimise the medicinal strand.

Is there modern research on Dai Mao (Carapax Eretmochelydis)?
Yes, but almost all of it is conservation biology and wildlife forensics rather than pharmacology. There is no contemporary clinical research programme on hawksbill carapace as a therapeutic material, and there could not legitimately be one for a Critically Endangered, Appendix I species.
- Trade reconstruction — the 2019 Science Advances study rebuilt 150 years of tortoiseshell transactions to model historical harvest, producing the ~9 million figure and mapping how the networks globalised after 1950. It explicitly links the structure of that historical trade to present-day patterns of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Which formula on this site lists Dai Mao, and what is used instead today?
One formula in our records carries it: Zhi Bao Dan (“Greatest Treasure Special Pill”), one of the classical “three treasures” for phlegm-heat and heat-toxin misting the Pericardium. Its recorded composition also includes several other restricted materials — Zhu Sha (cinnabar), Xiong Huang (realgar), She Xiang (musk) and Xi Jiao (rhinoceros horn) — which is why that formula is documented on this site as an emergency-only historical record rather than as a usable prescription.
On substitutes, we state only what we can verify. Unlike rhinoceros horn, which has a well-documented and widely adopted replacement in Shui Niu Jiao (water buffalo horn), we could not confirm a single agreed one-to-one substitute for Dai Mao to a resolvable source, so none is asserted here. What is documented is the general pattern: modern commercial versions of these formulas commonly omit or replace the protected and toxic ingredients.
