What is the typical dosage of Qing Xiang Zi?
3–15 g — this is the range this site records. Other standard references commonly give a narrower window of roughly 3–10 g or 9–15 g in decoction. The part used is the seed.
- Part used — the ripe seed, small, shiny and black. The flower of a related Celosia species is a separate herb entirely (see notes).
- Preparation — ordinarily decocted. Small hard seeds are conventionally crushed before decoction so the constituents can be extracted.
- Dose ceiling matters here — unlike most of the eye herbs, this one carries a specific traditional restriction rather than a general one, so it belongs in professional hands rather than in casual home use.
Range variation between references. The 3–15 g span recorded here is wider than the ranges given in several published materia medica, which cluster nearer 9–15 g. We have not narrowed the recorded range; the recorded span contains the published ones.

Is Qing Xiang Zi contraindicated in glaucoma?
Yes — this is the one caution that matters most for this herb, and it is the one this site already records. The recorded caution reads: never use in patients with glaucoma, or in Liver and Kidney deficiency. The traditional rationale given across the materia medica literature is that Qing Xiang Zi is held to dilate the pupil, which would be expected to worsen raised intraocular pressure. It is a genuinely classical and clinically meaningful restriction, and it is the main reason this herb is not a casual eye remedy.
- Glaucoma / raised intraocular pressure — contraindicated. Anyone with diagnosed glaucoma, ocular hypertension, a shallow anterior chamber, or a family history of angle-closure should not take this herb outside professional supervision, and should tell their eye-care provider about any herbal use.
- Liver and Kidney deficiency — the second recorded restriction. As a cold, downward-draining herb it is unsuited to a depleted picture; where the eye complaint arises from deficiency rather than fire, the site’s own records point instead toward the nourishing herbs and toward Mi Meng Hua.
- Cold Spleen or Stomach with loose stools — the general handling of the fire-draining category applies.
- Pregnancy — not documented as contraindicated in the sources we could verify. Professional guidance is the appropriate route.
- Do not self-treat eye disease — a reference note, not a property of the herb. Red, painful or deteriorating vision needs professional assessment; herbal use is not a substitute.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose
Does Qing Xiang Zi really dilate the pupil? Is Qing Xiang Zi toxic?
Two separate questions, and they have different answers. On general toxicity: none is documented at customary doses — the seed has a food and folk-medicine history and no poisoning reports we could verify. On the pupil-dilating (mydriatic) effect that underlies the glaucoma contraindication: we could find no modern experimental evidence for it, and we could find none against it either. We report that gap rather than resolving it in either direction.
- What we searched — we searched the biomedical literature for any study linking Celosia argentea to mydriasis, pupil dilation, intraocular pressure or glaucoma. We found no such study — not a null result, not a confirmation, simply no published investigation of the question that we could identify.
- What that means — the mydriatic rationale is a traditional-use reference fact, transmitted through the materia medica literature and consistently repeated across sources. It has not, as far as we can establish, been tested. It should be neither asserted as pharmacologically demonstrated nor dismissed as folklore; a long-standing, specific and internally coherent clinical restriction that has never been studied is exactly that, and no more.
- How we treat it in practice — the contraindication stands as recorded. An untested traditional caution is a reason for care, not a reason for confidence in either direction; the cost of observing it is negligible and the cost of ignoring it, if it is correct, is not.
- General toxicity — no organ toxicity, no documented poisoning cases and no restricted-substance listing were found for this seed. It is not classed among the toxic materia medica, and this site’s record does not flag it as toxic. The realistic quality risk is misidentification rather than intrinsic hazard: seed of Celosia cristata and of four Amaranthus species are documented market adulterants.

(3) The recorded nature and flavour are sweet and cool, whereas most published materia medica and the standard pharmacopoeial entry give this herb as bitter and slightly cold. The third is a substantive difference rather than a spelling variant, and it interacts with how the herb is taught. We have not edited any identity field; all three are flagged for owner decision.

Herb-Drug Interactions
No well-established clinical herb–drug interactions are documented for Qing Xiang Zi. We found no interaction studies, case reports or clinical pharmacokinetic work specific to it.
Two precautionary flags follow from the preclinical literature rather than from any demonstrated interaction. An alcoholic extract of the seed lowered blood glucose in a rodent diabetes model, so awareness is reasonable for anyone on glucose-lowering medication. And given the traditional glaucoma restriction described above, anyone using prescribed eye medication — particularly pressure-lowering drops — should tell their eye-care provider about any herbal use. Neither point is a demonstrated clinical interaction; both are stated as precaution.

Is there modern research on Qing Xiang Zi (Celosia argentea seed)?
Yes — a substantial chemistry literature centred on triterpenoid saponins (the “celosins”), an acidic polysaccharide, and a family of unusual bicyclic peptides, plus preclinical liver, metabolic and neuroprotective findings. There are no clinical trials, and, notably, nothing at all on the eye.
- The chemistry — the seed’s characteristic constituents are oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins named celosins, several of which are species-specific enough to serve as identification markers. A 2021 study isolated nine saponins and two phenylacetonitrile glycosides from the seed and quantified them, and other groups have described additional new saponins and their in vitro anti-inflammatory and antitumour activity.
- Liver protection (preclinical) — celosian, an acidic polysaccharide from the seed, was characterised as an antihepatotoxic agent in chemical and immunological liver-injury models in animals, and was subsequently shown to be immunostimulating, inducing TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and nitric oxide production in laboratory models. This is the strand of research that most closely echoes the traditional Liver association, though the traditional Liver channel and the anatomical liver are not the same concept.
- Neuroprotection (cell culture) — saponins and phenylacetonitrile glycosides from the seed reduced oxidative-stress-induced damage in a motor-neuron-like cell line, improving viability and lowering reactive oxygen species and apoptosis. Cell-culture work only. (Note that this paper carries a published correction.)
- Metabolic (animal) — an alcoholic extract of the seed reduced blood glucose in alloxan-induced diabetic rats and prevented model-associated weight loss.
- Bicyclic peptides — the seed is the source of moroidin and the celogentins, bridged bicyclic peptides with antimitotic activity in laboratory assays. These are of interest as chemical scaffolds; no therapeutic claim follows.
- Quality control — two independent analytical programmes have been built specifically to distinguish this seed from its market adulterants, using morphology, microscopy, chromatographic fingerprinting and mass spectrometry. That such work was necessary is itself evidence that substitution occurs in trade.
What is missing. For an herb whose entire traditional identity is ophthalmic, there is no published research on its effects on the eye — no intraocular pressure work, no pupil studies, no ocular models. That absence is worth stating plainly, and it is the same gap discussed in the toxicity section.

What is the difference between Qing Xiang Zi and Ji Guan Hua?
They come from the same genus but are different plant parts of different species, and they are used for entirely different things. Qing Xiang Zi is the seed of Celosia argentea — a cool, Liver-clearing eye herb. Ji Guan Hua is the flower of Celosia cristata, the cockscomb, and is traditionally an astringent used to stop bleeding and discharge, not an eye herb at all. This site does not currently hold an entry for Ji Guan Hua, so no cross-reference is available here; the distinction is recorded because the shared genus makes the two easy to conflate.
This confusion is a real, documented quality-control problem, not a theoretical one. The seed of Celosia cristata is a recognised market adulterant of the seed of Celosia argentea: C. argentea seed is the species listed in official pharmacopoeias, while C. cristata seed is frequently present in the market without official listing, and the two are morphologically and chemically similar enough that dedicated analytical methods have had to be developed to tell them apart. A 2025 study separated them by combining digital image analysis with thin-layer chromatography and mass spectrometry, finding that C. cristata seed has more than twice the projected area of C. argentea seed, and that the saponin celosin F is found only in C. argentea while celosins H, J and K characterise C. cristata. A 2022 study went further and described diagnostic keys separating C. argentea seed from five Amaranthaceae adulterants — Celosia cristata plus four Amaranthus species.
How does Qing Xiang Zi compare with the other eye herbs?

- Qing Xiang Zi — Liver only; drains fire. The most forcefully heat-clearing of this group for Liver fire flaring into the eyes, and the only one carrying an eye-specific traditional restriction.
- Mi Meng Hua — sweet, cool; Liver; drains fire. The gentle counterpart, recorded as usable in both excess and deficiency presentations, where Qing Xiang Zi is for excess heat.

- Ju Hua — sweet, bitter, slightly cold; Liver and Lung; cool acrid exterior-releasing. Approaches the eye from the exterior — wind-heat with red eyes, headache, fever — and also calms ascendant Liver yang, which is the one action it shares closely with Qing Xiang Zi.
- Mu Zei — sweet, bitter, neutral; Liver and Lung; cool acrid exterior-releasing. For superficial visual obstruction with excessive tearing.
