What is Xiang Ru used for in Chinese medicine?
Xiang Ru is the classic summertime exterior-releasing herb — used for the pattern that arises when someone is exposed to summerheat but also to cold and damp, typically from cold food, cold drinks or air conditioning in hot weather. The picture is chills and fever with no sweating, headache, body ache, abdominal fullness and diarrhoea. Acrid, aromatic and slightly warm, entering the Lung and Stomach channels, it opens the exterior while simultaneously transforming dampness in the middle burner.
Its main traditional actions:
- Releases the exterior and disperses summerheat-damp — summertime exterior disorders with chills, fever, headache, absence of sweating, body ache and diarrhoea; it induces sweating where a warm-season pathogen is trapped by cold and damp.
- Transforms dampness and harmonises the middle burner — abdominal fullness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea accompanying that summertime pattern; the aromatic quality is what does this work.
- Promotes urination and reduces oedema — oedema and difficult urination, particularly when an exterior disorder is present at the same time. Our own record singles this out as a distinct indication.
- Traditionally described as “summer’s Ma Huang” — a long-standing comparison: it opens the exterior and promotes urination the way Ma Huang does, but it is the herb reached for in hot weather rather than in winter cold.

Chinese Herb Dosage
What is the dosage of Xiang Ru, and how is it cooked?
3–9 g — and the cooking time changes with the intended action. For an exterior condition it is cooked only 10–15 minutes, because the aromatic volatile oils that release the exterior are driven off by long boiling. For oedema and difficult urination it is cooked longer and reduced into a concentrated decoction. The part used is the whole herb (aerial parts).
- Exterior use — short decoction, 10–15 minutes; add it late rather than boiling it from the start.
- Oedema / urination — longer cooking, concentrated decoction.
- Serving temperature matters — taken hot, this herb has a recognised tendency to provoke vomiting; it is traditionally taken cool or at room temperature to avoid that.
- Part used — whole aerial herb, dried.

Chinese Herb Contraindications & Cautions
Are there cautions for Xiang Ru?
Xiang Ru is contraindicated in exterior deficiency with spontaneous sweating. That is the standing caution on our own record and it follows directly from what the herb does — it induces sweating, so it is the wrong herb where the exterior is already open and sweat is leaking out. The second practical caution is its tendency to provoke vomiting: our record notes that this is reduced by taking the decoction cool rather than hot, or by combining it with Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis) or Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis).
- Exterior deficiency with sweating — contraindicated.
- Nausea/vomiting tendency — take cool or at room temperature; traditionally paired with Huang Qin or Huang Lian to offset it.
- Not a hot-weather tonic — it is for a specific summertime exterior-cold-with-damp pattern, not for heat exhaustion or general summer discomfort.
- Short course — an acute-pattern, exterior-releasing herb; long-term use is outside its traditional role, and it should be used under qualified supervision.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose
Low at customary doses. Xiang Ru is not flagged as a toxic or endangered herb on our own record, and no significant toxicity is reported for it in traditional use. The practical limits are tolerance-related: because it is strongly aromatic and diaphoretic, the recognised effects at the edge of its range are nausea and vomiting — which is why it is traditionally taken cool — and excessive sweating if used where the exterior is already deficient.
Supporting laboratory context: a 90-day subchronic toxicity study gave a water extract of Mosla chinensis to male and female rats at 0.2, 2 and 20 g/kg/day and concluded the material is safe within its recommended dose range, with a noted slight effect on uric acid metabolism associated with changes in intestinal flora. That is an animal study of one of the source species, not a clinical safety demonstration, but it is consistent with the traditional assessment.

Herb-Drug Interactions
No well-established clinical herb–drug interactions are documented for Xiang Ru. Its volatile oil is rich in carvacrol and thymol, monoterpenes that are widely consumed in culinary herbs such as thyme and oregano, and no clinical interaction has been established for the herb at traditional doses. Because it is diaphoretic and promotes urination, a practitioner should be aware of concurrent diuretic therapy or of situations where fluid balance is already a concern — that is prudent coordination, not a demonstrated interaction. Is there modern research on Xiang Ru (Herba Elsholtziae / Mosla chinensis)?
Yes — a sizeable preclinical literature on the volatile oil and flavonoids, with no human clinical trial evidence. A 2022 review of Elsholtzia ciliata catalogues 352 identified compounds across flavonoids, terpenoids, phenylpropanoids and alkaloids, and describes antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, insecticidal, hypolipidaemic, hypoglycaemic, analgesic, antiarrhythmic, antitumour and immunoregulatory activity in laboratory models — noting that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory work is the most mature. The characteristic volatile-oil markers, carvacrol and thymol, are routinely quantified as quality indicators.
- Antiviral and anti-inflammatory (preclinical) — total flavonoids from Mosla chinensis reduced lung pathology and Toll-like-receptor pathway gene expression in influenza-A-infected mice; separate work isolated antiviral and anti-inflammatory constituents from the twigs. Carvacrol itself has been studied for suppressing the excessive immune response to influenza A. Animal and cell models only.
- Allergic inflammation (preclinical) — an aqueous extract of Mosla chinensis suppressed histamine release and proinflammatory cytokine expression in rat and human mast cells via calcium- and NF-κB-dependent mechanisms.
- Gut and antimicrobial (preclinical) — constituents of the Jiangxiangru cultivar reduced inflammation via MAPK signalling and shifted intestinal microbiota in a mouse colitis model; the essential oil has documented antibacterial activity, including inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation.
- Safety (animal) — a 90-day rat study of Mosla chinensis water extract found it safe within its recommended dose range (see toxicity).
Reading note: a large share of the modern research indexed under “Xiang Ru” is conducted on Mosla chinensis (including the Jiangxiangru cultivar) rather than on Elsholtzia ciliata, the species our own record’s pharmaceutical Latin names. The two are used interchangeably in clinical practice and share their principal volatile-oil chemistry, but they are distinct plants; findings are reported here with the studied species named so the distinction stays visible.

What plant is Xiang Ru, and is it related to madder?
Xiang Ru is a mint-family herb, not a madder. It is the dried aerial part of Elsholtzia and Mosla species in the family Lamiaceae — the same family as mint, basil and perilla — which is exactly what its intense aromatic quality would lead you to expect. Its characteristic constituents are the volatile-oil monoterpenes carvacrol and thymol, classic Lamiaceae markers.
Discrepancy flagged for owner decision: the common-name field on our own record reads “Aromatic Madder, Elsholtzia.” The “madder” element appears to be an error. Madder is Rubia cordifolia, family Rubiaceae — in Chinese medicine that is Qian Cao, a bitter, cold, blood-cooling herb that stops bleeding and invigorates blood. It is a completely different plant in a completely different family with a completely different clinical role. The “Elsholtzia” half of the field is correct and matches the pharmaceutical Latin on the record (Herba Elsholtziae). We have not altered the identity field — it is recorded here for the owner to decide.
Which species is the real source of Xiang Ru?
More than one, and the literature is candid about it. Two closely related Lamiaceae materials circulate under the name Xiang Ru:
- Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyland — the plant matching our record’s pharmaceutical Latin Herba Elsholtziae, known regionally as Hai Zhou Xiang Ru.
- Mosla chinensis Maxim., including the cultivar “Jiangxiangru” — the source of much of the commercial supply and of most of the modern research published under the name Xiang Ru.
A 2022 review of Elsholtzia ciliata states directly that in clinical practice the aerial parts of Mosla chinensis and its Jiangxiangru cultivar are used as E. ciliata, while noting the two are morphologically distinct. Both are aromatic Lamiaceae herbs with overlapping volatile-oil chemistry, and the traditional description the review gives for E. ciliata — acrid flavour, lukewarm nature, induces sweating to release the exterior, removes dampness to regulate the stomach, promotes urination to reduce oedema — matches our own record’s actions almost point for point.
Which formulas use Xiang Ru?
In our own formula records Xiang Ru is the chief herb of Xiang Ru San (Elsholtzia Powder), the defining prescription for summertime exterior cold with interior damp. Traditionally it is also combined with Huang Lian or Huang Qin — bitter, cold herbs that both address the heat component and, per our own record’s caution, temper the herb’s tendency to cause vomiting.
