What is the typical dosage of Xin Yi Hua, and why is it decocted wrapped in cloth?
Roughly 3–9 g, taken as a decoction, pill, or as an ointment for local (topical) nasal application. A distinctive point of preparation: when decocted, Xin Yi Hua is classically wrapped in cheesecloth (a fabric infusion bag) before going into the pot, because the fine hairs covering the flower bud can otherwise irritate the throat and stomach if swallowed loose.

Are there cautions for Xin Yi Hua?
Caution is advised with heat or fire signs from Yin deficiency — Xin Yi Hua's warm, acrid, dispersing nature is not well suited to a nose or sinus problem rooted in Yin-deficient heat rather than Wind-Cold. Overdosage may cause dizziness.

Is there modern research on Xin Yi Hua (Flos Magnoliae) for nasal/allergic conditions?
Yes — laboratory and animal research on Flos Magnoliae's lignan constituents supports anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory mechanisms relevant to nasal congestion, though clinical trials specific to Xin Yi Hua remain limited.
- Fargesin (in vitro) — among several constituents isolated from Flos Magnoliae, fargesin showed the strongest suppression of mast-cell degranulation and T-cell proliferation in human immune cells, mechanisms consistent with reducing the allergic cascade behind nasal congestion; cell-based evidence, not a clinical trial.
- Magnolol and allergic rhinitis (animal + cell model) — in an ovalbumin-induced allergic-rhinitis mouse model, magnolol (a compound associated with the Magnolia genus and studied here in the context of Flos Magnoliae) reduced cytokine levels and eosinophil infiltration by blocking the ORAI1 and ANO1 ion channels involved in T-cell activation and mucus secretion.

Is Xin Yi Hua the same as Hou Po (Magnolia Bark)?
No — despite both coming from Magnolia trees, Xin Yi Hua and Hou Po are different parts of different Magnolia species, used for entirely different purposes. This is a common point of confusion worth stating plainly.
- Xin Yi Hua — the dried, unopened flower bud of Magnolia biondii (or related Magnolia species); acrid and warm; opens the nose and disperses Wind-Cold from the upper body.
- Hou Po — the dried stem or root bark of Magnolia officinalis; bitter, acrid, and warm; moves stagnant Qi, dries dampness, and descends rebellious Qi in the digestive and respiratory systems (abdominal fullness, nausea, cough with copious phlegm).
The two share only the genus and a broadly warm, acrid quality; their target organs, indications, and typical formulas do not overlap.
