What is Ban Zhi Lian used for in Chinese medicine?

Ban Zhi Lian is a spicy, bitter, cold herb that clears heat, resolves toxicity, invigorates the blood and reduces swelling. Our record classifies it with the herbs that clear heat and eliminate toxins and gives it four channels — Large Intestine, Liver, Lung and Stomach. The spicy quality is worth noting: most herbs in this category are purely bitter and cold, and the acrid, moving element is what underlies its blood-invigorating, swelling-reducing side.

The name: our record translates it as “half branch lotus.” It refers to the plant’s habit — the small blue-violet flowers are borne along one side of the stem — and has nothing to do with lotus proper.

Its standing partner: Ban Zhi Lian is most often prescribed together with Bai Hua She She Cao. The two are combined so routinely in modern Chinese prescribing that much of the laboratory literature studies them as a fixed pair rather than separately.   • What is the typical dosage of Ban Zhi Lian?

    Our record gives 15–60 g, using the entire plant. That is a high ceiling by materia medica standards and matches its partner herb Bai Hua She She Cao exactly — both are bulky, mild-tasting whole-plant medicinals with low acute toxicity, traditionally given in large quantity when the intent is to resolve toxin, reduce a mass or drain a swelling. Smaller doses at the bottom of the range apply when it is one supporting herb among many.

    • Decoction — 15–60 g of the dried whole plant.
    • Part used — the entire plant, aerial parts with root, harvested in the flowering season and dried.
    • Fresh herb, externally — traditionally crushed and applied to sores, swellings and bites; no internal dose applies to external use.
    • As a pair — when combined with Bai Hua She She Cao, both are commonly given toward the upper part of their ranges. This is a practitioner decision, not a self-treatment one.

Chinese Herb Contraindications & Cautions

  • Are there cautions for Ban Zhi Lian?

    Our record contraindicates it during pregnancy and in cases of blood deficiency. Both follow from its character: it moves blood as well as clearing heat, which is the reason for the pregnancy contraindication, and it is cold and draining rather than nourishing, which is the reason it is inappropriate where blood is already deficient.

    • Pregnancy — contraindicated per our record; blood-invigorating herbs are avoided as a class.
    • Blood deficiency — contraindicated per our record.
    • Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold — the general caution for cold, bitter herbs given at large doses; poor appetite and loose stools argue against it.
    • Bleeding risk — a herb described as invigorating the blood warrants care in anyone with a bleeding disorder or on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy. This is a precautionary reading of its traditional action rather than a documented interaction.
    • Cancer care — this herb dominates online material about herbal cancer treatment. The research below is overwhelmingly laboratory and animal work, and the two human trials that exist were early-phase safety studies. It is not a cancer treatment. Anyone under oncological care should raise any herb with their treating team before use, never instead of treatment.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose

  • Is Ban Zhi Lian toxic?

    The herb is not classed as toxic in the materia medica and is used at doses up to 60 g. The most informative human safety data comes not from the traditional literature but from two early-phase oncology trials of BZL101, an oral aqueous extract of Scutellaria barbata studied in women with advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

    • Phase I trial — 21 patients took 350 mL of oral BZL101 daily. There were no grade III or IV adverse events. The most frequent low-grade effects attributed to the extract were nausea (38%), diarrhoea (24%), headache (19%), flatulence (14%), vomiting (10%), constipation (10%) and fatigue (10%). The investigators concluded it was safe with a favourable toxicity profile.
    • Phase 1B dose-escalation trial — 27 women across four dose cohorts. Grade 3 and 4 adverse events were uncommon, but dose-limiting toxicities were recorded and included a grade 4 elevation of AST, a liver enzyme, along with grade 3 diarrhoea, fatigue and rib pain. A maximum tolerated dose was not reached, so it was defined as the maximum administered dose of 40 g per day.
    • How to read that — gastrointestinal upset at high extract doses is the main expected effect, and the single grade 4 liver-enzyme elevation is a signal worth recording even though it did not recur as a pattern. These were highly concentrated extracts given to heavily pretreated cancer patients, not decoctions in ordinary practice.
    • Species identity — because three unrelated plants trade in English as “skullcap,” correctly identified material matters. Liver-injury reports attached to American skullcap concern a different species (see the comparison section).

  • Is there modern research on Ban Zhi Lian (Scutellaria barbata)?

    Yes — a very large body of it, and it is almost entirely preclinical. Hundreds of laboratory papers report antitumour activity for this herb in cancer cell lines and tumour-bearing mice, and it appears in more Chinese anticancer formulas than almost any other single herb. What has not followed is the clinical evidence: the human record consists of two small early-phase safety trials of one proprietary extract, neither designed to demonstrate efficacy. No clinical benefit in humans has been established, and nothing here should be read as a cancer treatment.

    • Chemistry — the characteristic constituents are flavonoids (scutellarin, scutellarein, apigenin and luteolin derivatives) and a distinctive family of neo-clerodane diterpenoid alkaloids, the scutebarbatines, along with polysaccharides and essential oil components. Comprehensive reviews of the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology and quality control of the species have been published.
    • Reported preclinical mechanisms — reviews describe inhibition of proliferation, induction of apoptosis, disruption of angiogenesis and modulation of immune responses, acting principally through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR, MAPK and NF-κB signalling pathways. Every one of these findings is from cells or animals.
    • The two human trials — BZL101, an oral aqueous extract, was tested in a phase I trial in advanced breast cancer and then in a phase 1B dose-escalation trial in metastatic breast cancer. Both reported the extract to be tolerable and both described stable disease in a minority of heavily pretreated patients. These were uncontrolled, unblinded, small, early-phase studies whose primary endpoints were safety and dose. Findings described by the investigators as “encouraging” or “promising” are hypothesis-generating language, not evidence of benefit. No subsequent randomised controlled trial has established efficacy.
    • The herb pair — much of the literature studies Scutellaria barbata together with Hedyotis diffusa (Bai Hua She She Cao) rather than alone, mirroring how it is actually prescribed. A comprehensive review of the pair in hepatocellular carcinoma models examines their combined effects and mechanisms — again, preclinical.
    • Other directions — laboratory work reports synergy with low-dose 5-fluorouracil in cell models and suppression of Wnt/β-catenin signalling in colorectal cancer models. Cell and animal work only.
    • Quality of the literature — as with its partner herb, a large share of recent output is network-pharmacology and molecular-docking modelling rather than experimental work. Volume of publication is not the same as strength of evidence.

    Honest summary: Ban Zhi Lian is one of the most-studied herbs in the Chinese materia medica by paper count and one of the least-proven by clinical standards. It is a legitimate subject of laboratory investigation and a traditional heat-clearing, toxin-resolving, blood-invigorating herb. It is not a demonstrated treatment for any disease.

  • Is Ban Zhi Lian the same as Huang Qin?

    No. They are two different species in the same genus, and they are used for different things. Huang Qin is Scutellaria baicalensis — the root — and our records place it with the herbs that clear heat and dry dampness, entering the Gall Bladder, Large Intestine, Lung and Stomach channels. Ban Zhi Lian is Scutellaria barbata — the whole plant — and sits with the herbs that clear heat and eliminate toxins. Shared genus, shared family (Lamiaceae, the mints), different medicine.

    • Different part — Huang Qin is a root; Ban Zhi Lian is the entire aerial plant with root. Different plant organs, different chemistry.
    • Different flavour profile — our records give Huang Qin as bitter and cold; Ban Zhi Lian as spicy, bitter and cold. The acrid element in Ban Zhi Lian underlies its moving, blood-invigorating character, which Huang Qin does not share.
    • Different job — Huang Qin dries damp-heat, clears Lung heat and is a classical herb for calming a restless fetus. Ban Zhi Lian resolves toxin, disperses swelling and moves blood. They are not interchangeable, and neither substitutes for the other in a formula.
    • Different dose scale — a root used at conventional gram doses versus a whole plant used at 15–60 g. Seeing a 60 g figure for “skullcap” and applying it to Huang Qin would be a serious error.

    Is Ban Zhi Lian the same as the “skullcap” sold in Western herb shops?

    No, and this one matters for safety. In English-language supplement literature the unqualified word “skullcap” usually means Scutellaria lateriflora, a North American plant used in Western herbalism as a calming herb for anxiety and insomnia. The NIH drug-induced liver injury reference carries a chapter on that plant, noting it has been linked to several instances of clinically apparent liver injury, usually in combination with other botanicals. Those reports concern S. lateriflora — a different species with a different traditional use — and should not be read across to Ban Zhi Lian without evidence. Three distinct plants share the English name “skullcap”: S. barbata (Ban Zhi Lian), S. baicalensis (Huang Qin) and S. lateriflora (American skullcap).

    Discrepancy note: our own record gives the Latin as Radix Scutellariae Barbatae, which denotes the root, while the same record specifies the part used as the entire plant. The published materia medica consensus and the research literature both treat this herb as a whole-plant medicinal, conventionally written Herba Scutellariae Barbatae. The two entries in our record are inconsistent with one another; the whole-plant reading is the one used throughout this page, and the Latin designation is flagged rather than altered here.
