What is Zi Bei Tian Kui used for in Chinese medicine?

Zi Bei Tian Kui is a sweet, cool herb that clears heat and resolves toxins, with a secondary blood-cooling and blood-moving action — it is used for Lung-heat cough, including cough with blood, and applied for burns, toxic sores and traumatic injury. The name means “purple-backed tian kui” — a plain description of the plant, whose leaves are green above and distinctly purple-red beneath.   • What is the typical dosage of Zi Bei Tian Kui?

    Our record gives 3–9 g. That is a small range by the standards of the heat-clearing, toxin-resolving category, most of whose members are dosed at 15 g and upward, and it is consistent with a herb used as one supporting ingredient rather than as the weight of a prescription. The aerial parts of the plant are used; it is also applied externally, crushed, for burns and toxic sores, in which case no internal dose applies.

  • Are there cautions for Zi Bei Tian Kui?

    Our record carries one traditional caution: do not use it for yin-type boils. That is the standard restriction on a cold, toxin-resolving herb — yin-type sores are flat, dusky, chronic and cold in character, and adding a cooling herb makes them worse rather than better. No toxicity and no drug interaction are recorded for this herb, and none could be sourced.

    • Yin-type boils — contraindicated, per our record. Cold, deep, non-suppurating sores need warming and tonifying, not clearing.
    • Pattern fit — as a cool, blood-cooling herb it is a poor match for cold patterns and for deficiency without heat.
    • OxalatesBegonia is a documented oxalate-accumulating genus. Early plant-physiology work on the metabolic conversion of ascorbic acid to oxalic acid used Begonia as one of its oxalate-accumulating study plants, and a food-science analysis of an edible Mexican Begonia measured oxalic acid in the leaves and stalks and concluded on that basis that eating the fresh stalks should be approached with care. Neither study examined the species used as this herb, so this is a genus-level observation, not a measurement for Zi Bei Tian Kui; it is recorded because oxalate load is a reasonable question to ask of any Begonia used internally, and because we would rather state the limit of what is known than leave the question unmentioned.     • Correct identification — see the notes section. The name collides with an unrelated drug, and the substitution would not be a like-for-like one.
    • Sourcing and conservation — the species referred to this drug is documented as endangered in parts of its range and is a protected species in Guangdong Province. That is a supply and legality consideration rather than a safety one, but it belongs on the record.

  • Is there modern research on Zi Bei Tian Kui (Begonia fimbristipula)?

    Very little — and it is more honest to say so than to dress up what exists. A search of the biomedical literature returns only a handful of papers on this species, and none of them is a pharmacological or clinical study of the herb. The published work is botanical and genomic: tools for identifying, conserving and propagating a plant that is under pressure in the wild.

    • Conservation genetics — eighteen polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for population-genetic and conservation study of the species, which the authors describe as an endangered medicinal plant on the verge of extinction in parts of its range through habitat loss.
    • Genome resources — the complete chloroplast genome has been characterised, and a chromosome-level nuclear genome assembly has since been published, explicitly framed as a resource for the conservation and utilisation of a valuable medicinal herb that is a protected species in Guangdong Province.
    • Cultivation and germplasm — Chinese-language work has examined tissue-culture propagation and surveyed wild germplasm resources of the species in Guangdong, again with conservation and supply in view rather than pharmacology.
    • What is missing — no pharmacological study, no animal model, no clinical trial, and no chemical characterisation of the medicinal preparation could be identified for this species. There is no modern evidence base for the traditional indications, and none is claimed here.

    Honest summary: the modern literature on Zi Bei Tian Kui tells us that it is a real, recognised, regionally used medicinal plant that is scarce enough to have attracted conservation attention — and nothing at all about how it works or whether it works. That is the accurate position, and padding it would not serve anyone.

  • Is Zi Bei Tian Kui the same as Tian Kui Zi?

    No — and this is the one thing that genuinely matters about this herb’s name. Zi Bei Tian Kui is a Begonia; Tian Kui Zi is Semiaquilegia adoxoides, a buttercup-family root. They are different plants in different families, and the two-syllable overlap in pinyin is the whole of their relationship. “Tian kui” is a descriptive folk name applied to more than one small, soft-leaved mountain plant, which is exactly the condition under which collisions of this kind arise.

    • Zi Bei Tian Kui (this page) — the aerial parts of a Begonia, family Begoniaceae. Sweet, cool; Liver and Stomach; clears heat and resolves toxins, cools and invigorates blood; 3–9 g. The species referred to this drug in the Chinese literature is Begonia fimbristipula Hance, a herb of Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang, documented in the botanical literature as a medicinal plant and as a protected and endangered species in parts of its range.
    • Tian Kui Zi — the tuberous root of Semiaquilegia adoxoides, family Ranunculaceae, a relative of the columbines. A separate drug with its own chemistry, studied in its own right in the modern literature under the name Tiankuizi. This site does not currently hold a Tian Kui Zi entry, so no comparison of its recorded properties is made here.
    • Practical tell — the zi bei (“purple-backed”) qualifier is what marks the Begonia, and the zi (“seed/fruit”) ending marks the Semiaquilegia root. Reading “tian kui” on its own settles nothing. Where a prescription or a supplier label carries the bare name, the identity has to be established some other way — from the characters, the Latin name, or the plant part.

    Identity points flagged, not corrected — two matters for owner decision. (1) Our record carries no Chinese characters for this entry. For most herbs that is a cosmetic gap; here it is the substantive one, because the characters are the field that would distinguish this herb from Tian Kui Zi beyond argument. (2) Our own formula data lists this herb, as Herba Begoniae, as the fifth ingredient of Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin (Five-Ingredient Decoction to Eliminate Toxin), alongside Jin Yin Hua, Pu Gong Ying, Zi Hua Di Ding and Ye Ju Hua. The identity of that fifth ingredient is a long-standing and genuine dispute in the literature: the formula’s classical text names zi bei tian kui zi, and modern pharmacopoeial and review sources for this formula specify Semiaquilegiae Radix — that is, Tian Kui Zi, not Begonia. A 2026 comprehensive review of the formula lists its five components as Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, Taraxaci Herba, Chrysanthemi Indici Flos, Violae Herba and Semiaquilegiae Radix. This is a real conflict between our own data and the current mainstream reading, not a variant spelling, and it is recorded here rather than silently changed. Correcting it would alter both a herb record and a formula record and is an owner decision; we would not make a change of that kind on a single source.
