What is Lu Dou (mung bean) used for in Chinese medicine?
Lu Dou is the mung bean — an ordinary food eaten across Asia, not a prescription herb — and Chinese medicine uses it for one thing above all: relieving summerheat. Sweet and cool, entering the Heart and Stomach, it sits in the small category of herbs that clear and relieve summerheat, where most of the members are foods.
Its traditional uses as recorded here:
- Relieves summerheat — particularly for excessive thirst in hot weather. Mung bean soup is drunk as an everyday summer beverage across southern China and much of Southeast Asia specifically to head summerheat off before it arrives, which is about as close as materia medica gets to a genuinely domestic remedy.
- Clears heat and resolves toxicity — the classical “antidote” role, traditionally applied to poisonings of various kinds including overdose of aconite (Fu Zi). See the separate question below; this is described here as classical practice and is not first aid.
The most useful thing to know about Lu Dou is what it is not. It is not a strong medicinal, it is not prescribed in courses, and its dosage range overlaps entirely with what somebody would eat for lunch. It belongs in the same conversation as watermelon (Xi Gua) and lotus leaf (He Ye) — the other summerheat foods held here — rather than alongside the pharmacologically active herbs.

Chinese Herb Dosage
What is the typical dosage of Lu Dou (mung bean)?
15–30 g as recorded here, though as a food the quantity is far more elastic than that. It is most often prepared as a soup or thin sweet porridge and drunk cool, and a domestic bowl will contain considerably more than 30 g without anyone treating it as a dose. The medicinal figure is a guide for its use inside a decoction, not a limit on eating mung beans.
- How it is prepared — boiled until the beans burst, taken as the soup, often lightly sweetened and cooled. The cooking liquid is regarded as the active part.
- Skin versus bean — the green seed coat (Lu Dou Yi/Pi) is traditionally held to be the more heat-clearing part, and the bean itself the more nourishing. Where the aim is purely to clear summerheat, the soup is not skimmed or hulled.
- The classical antidote proportion — the record here notes a traditional pairing with Gan Cao (licorice root) in a ratio of 120 g Lu Dou to 60 g Gan Cao. This is recorded as historical materia medica information; see the caution below.

Chinese Herb Contraindications & Cautions
Are there cautions for Lu Dou (mung bean)? Is it really an antidote for poisoning?
The recorded caution is a mild one — avoid it in cold from Spleen and Stomach deficiency with diarrhoea — which is simply the observation that a cooling food does not suit a cold, weak digestion. As a staple pulse it is otherwise unremarkable in safety terms.
The antidote question needs stating carefully. Classical Chinese materia medica does describe Lu Dou as a general antidote for toxicity, including for pesticide exposure and for overdose of the aconite herbs, and the record here preserves that description along with the traditional 120 g Lu Dou to 60 g Gan Cao proportion. That is a description of historical practice, and it is recorded here for reference and completeness.
- Poisoning is a medical emergency. Suspected poisoning — from a plant, a medicine, a chemical, or anything else — requires immediate emergency medical care or a poison control centre. It does not call for a food remedy, and delay to prepare one is itself a risk.
- This is not first aid and must not be used as such. Nothing on this page describes a treatment for poisoning. The classical antidote role is documented history, and no modern evidence supports mung bean as an antidote in acute human poisoning.
- Aconite specifically — aconite poisoning is rapidly life-threatening and is managed in hospital. The traditional pairing is recorded because it is part of the materia medica record, not because it is an option.
- Spleen and Stomach cold with diarrhoea — the ordinary dietary caution. A cool food will not help a cold, loose digestion, and traditionally it is also avoided in the very frail and during convalescence from cold-type illness.
- Traditional interaction note — a folk convention holds that mung bean should not be eaten alongside warming tonic herbs, on the reasoning that a cooling, toxin-clearing food works against them. This is a traditional convention rather than a documented pharmacological interaction.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose
None. Mung bean is a food. It is one of the most widely eaten pulses in the world, is not classified as toxic in any tradition, and carries no dose ceiling. The only considerations are the ordinary food-safety ones that apply to any legume and any sprout: beans are cooked before eating, and raw sprouts — mung bean sprouts included — are a recognised vehicle for foodborne bacteria and are generally advised against for pregnant women, young children, the elderly and the immunocompromised. That is a food-hygiene point about sprouts in general, not a property of the herb.

Herb-Drug Interactions
No herb–drug interactions are documented for Lu Dou. No interaction study was located, and none would ordinarily be expected for a staple food eaten in ordinary quantities. The traditional convention against combining mung bean with warming tonic herbs is a Chinese-medicine dietary principle, not a pharmacological interaction, and no clinical data support or refute it. Is there modern research on Lu Dou (mung bean, Vigna radiata)?
A great deal — but almost all of it is food science and nutrition rather than research on mung bean as a Chinese herb. The bean is well characterised nutritionally and phytochemically, its main polyphenols identified as the flavone glycosides vitexin and isovitexin, alongside a substantial protein, dietary fibre, mineral, polysaccharide and bioactive-peptide profile. What follows is context for a food, not evidence for a traditional indication.
- Composition and general health effects (reviews) — a 2019 review in Nutrients summarises mung bean’s polyphenols, polysaccharides and peptides, and the preclinical literature reporting effects on blood glucose, blood lipids and blood pressure, along with hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activity. A 2021 review covers its metabolites and pharmaceutical potential as a food legume crop. Both are review-level summaries of largely cell and animal work.
- Heat stress — the one that touches the traditional use — a 2011 study reported that mung bean flavonoids showed antioxidant activity in a heat-stress model. It is animal and cell work, not a study of summerheat as Chinese medicine defines it, and it is offered as an interesting adjacency rather than as validation.
- Antioxidant and cardiovascular (preclinical) — phytochemicals isolated from mung bean seed showed antioxidant and myocardial-preservation activity in a 2016 study; a 2021 review examines mung bean polyphenols in Alzheimer’s disease models. Preclinical.
- Sprouting — germination measurably changes the bean’s metabolite profile, which is the food-science counterpart to the traditional distinction between the bean and its sprout.
- Detoxification — what is not there — no study was located supporting mung bean as an antidote in acute human poisoning. Searches on mung bean and heavy metals return agricultural papers about the plant absorbing cadmium, lead or chromium from contaminated soil, which is the opposite subject: it concerns the crop taking up contaminants, not the bean removing them from a person. Those papers are deliberately not cited here as pharmacology.
No human clinical trial of Lu Dou for any traditional Chinese medicine indication was located. The traditional use rests on long dietary practice and materia medica consensus.

Is Lu Dou the same thing as bean sprouts and glass noodles?
Yes — and that is the most useful anchor for a Western reader. Mung bean is the bean behind two things almost everyone has already eaten: the common bean sprout, and cellophane or “glass” noodles. The sprouts sold in supermarkets and used in stir-fries and spring rolls are germinated mung beans; the translucent noodles in hot pot, spring rolls and Korean japchae are made from mung bean starch. The bean is also the base of the sweet green soup eaten across China in summer, and of the paste in mooncakes and many Indian dishes where it appears as moong dal.
This matters for how the herb should be understood. Its safety profile, its dosing latitude and its tone all follow from the fact that it is a staple pulse eaten daily by hundreds of millions of people, not a medicinal isolated for its potency.
How is Lu Dou different from Chi Xiao Dou and Bai Bian Dou?
Three beans, three quite different jobs, and they are easy to confuse.
- Lu Dou (mung bean; sweet, cool; Heart and Stomach) — clears summerheat and resolves toxicity. The cooling one.
- Chi Xiao Dou (aduki bean, held here as Semen Phaseoli Calcarati; sweet, sour, neutral; Heart and Small Intestine) — sits in an entirely different category on this site, among the herbs that regulate water and drain dampness. It promotes urination and reduces swelling and oedema. The draining one.
- Bai Bian Dou (hyacinth bean, Semen Dolichoris Lablab; sweet, neutral; Spleen and Stomach) — the other bean in the summerheat category here, but neutral rather than cool: it strengthens the Spleen and transforms dampness, and is used for summerheat with dampness and digestive weakness rather than for heat and thirst. The strengthening one.
Formulas: no formula record on this site lists Lu Dou among its ingredients. That is consistent with what it is — a household food remedy rather than a component of the named classical prescriptions. (Traditional context, not treatment advice.)
Identity fields flagged for review: two points in the record here, neither of which has been altered. (1) The Chinese characters are given as 录豆; the standard written form of the herb name is 绿豆 (“green bean”), read lü dòu rather than lù dòu. (2) The Latin is given as Semen Phaseoli Munginis. The currently accepted botanical name for mung bean is Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek; the older names Phaseolus radiatus, Phaseolus mungo and Phaseolus aureus are widely used in older materia medica and are the origin of the Latin drug name here. The Phaseolus mungo name is additionally ambiguous, having also been applied to black gram (Vigna mungo), a different pulse. This is naming history rather than a conflict about which bean is meant.
