What is Di Gu Pi used for in Chinese medicine?

Di Gu Pi (Lycium root bark) cools blood and clears deficient heat — it is the classic herb for “steaming bone” (gu zheng) fever, the low-grade afternoon or night-time heat, night sweats, and irritability seen in yin-deficiency patterns, and it also clears heat from the Lung and cools reckless bleeding caused by heat in the blood.

Its main traditional actions:

  • Clears deficient heat / steaming-bone disorder — chronic low-grade fevers, night sweats, malar (cheek) flushing, thirst, and irritability from yin deficiency with heat.
  • Clears Lung heat, stops cough and wheezing — for cough with heat signs, particularly where Lung heat contributes to wheezing.
  • Cools the blood — for bleeding driven by heat in the blood, including coughing/vomiting of blood, nosebleed, and blood in the urine.
  • Drains floating/deficient fire from the Kidney channel — for toothache and other signs attributed to deficiency-fire rising from the Kidney.

  • What is the typical dosage of Di Gu Pi?

    Typically 6–15 g in decoction, using the dried root bark of the wolfberry (Lycium) plant — the outer cortex is peeled from the root and dried, distinct from the whole root or the berry. Standard materia medica references converge on this range for routine use in formulas addressing deficient heat, cough, or heat-driven bleeding.

  • Are there cautions for using Di Gu Pi?

    Di Gu Pi is cold in nature, so it is traditionally cautioned against in patients with an unresolved exterior disorder (an active common-cold/flu-type exterior invasion, where cooling herbs can trap the pathogen inward) and in cold from Spleen/Stomach deficiency — i.e., patients who already have a weak, cold digestive constitution (poor appetite, loose stool, cold limbs), since its cold, draining nature can aggravate this.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose

  • Low. Di Gu Pi has a long history of dietary and medicinal use with no significant toxicity reported at standard decoction doses. As a cold-natured herb, the main traditional concern is inappropriate use in cold/deficient-Spleen constitutions (see Cautions) rather than intrinsic toxicity.

  • Is there modern research on Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii / Lycium root bark)?

    Yes — a growing preclinical literature on platelet, metabolic, immune, and bone-related effects, with human clinical trials still lacking. Di Gu Pi contains characterized bioactive constituents including kukoamines (spermine alkaloids) and various phenolic and sesquiterpenoid compounds isolated specifically from Lycium root bark.

    • Platelet function (2026) — a study identified two fatty-acid-derived compounds (13-HODE and 13-HOTrE) in Di Gu Pi extract that selectively inhibited platelet function in laboratory testing, a novel mechanistic finding named directly for the herb.
    • Blood glucose (preclinical) — Lycium bark extract lowered and stabilized blood glucose in db/db (type 2 diabetic) mice over a 10-week study, improving insulin response and glucose uptake via multiple pathways including increased GLUT1 transporter expression.
    • Immune modulation (preclinical) — Lycium chinense root extract enhanced cytokine/chemokine production and macrophage phagocytic activity in laboratory models, consistent with a heat-clearing, immune-modulating traditional role.
    • Bone metabolism (preclinical) — separate laboratory studies report that Lycii Radicis Cortex extract influenced osteoclast differentiation and bone formation markers in cell and animal models.

    All of the above is preclinical (cell and animal) research; controlled human clinical trials on Di Gu Pi specifically are lacking, so this should be read as mechanistic context, not proof of effect in people.

Chinese Herb Notes

  • Is Di Gu Pi the same as Gou Qi Zi (goji berry)?

    No — Di Gu Pi and Gou Qi Zi come from the same wolfberry (Lycium) plant but are entirely different parts with entirely different actions. This is one of the most common points of confusion in Chinese herbal identity, so it is worth stating directly:

    • Di Gu Pi — the root bark (cortex), sweet and cold, used to clear deficient heat, cool the blood, and clear Lung heat. It is a heat-clearing herb, not a tonic.
    • Gou Qi Zi — the fruit (the familiar dried goji berry), sweet and neutral, used to tonify the Liver and Kidney, nourish blood, and benefit the eyes. It is a tonifying herb, functionally almost opposite in temperature and intent to Di Gu Pi.

    Both come from the same species (most commonly Lycium chinense or the closely related Lycium barbarum), which is why the shared plant name causes confusion — but a formula calling for Di Gu Pi is treating heat, while one calling for Gou Qi Zi is tonifying deficiency, and the two are not interchangeable.
