Ku Fan is used almost entirely as a topical substance — its strong drying and astringent action absorbs weeping exudate, dries damp skin lesions, stops itching, and stops local bleeding. What is the dosage of Ku Fan (calcined alum)?
Externally, an appropriate amount is used as needed — ground to a fine powder and applied directly to the lesion, or dissolved in water as a wash/soak; there is no fixed external ceiling because it is applied locally rather than absorbed systemically at meaningful levels. Internally — a distinct, dose-capped use — sources give about 0.6–1.5 g in pills or powder, for short courses only, always finely powdered first.
The internal dose is at or below Ming Fan’s internal range, consistent with Ku Fan being the more concentrated, more purely astringent prepared form; internal use of either form is traditionally kept small, short-term, and under a qualified practitioner.

Are there cautions for Ku Fan (calcined alum)? Is it safe?
Ku Fan is classified as slightly toxic, chiefly a concern with internal use or overdose rather than typical topical application; internal use is traditionally kept to the small dose above, short courses, and professional supervision. Traditional sources also list it as unsuitable where the underlying constitution is yin-deficient or where Spleen–Stomach digestion is already weak, since its cold, drying, astringent nature can aggravate those patterns.
- Topical use on broken/extensive skin — because it is aluminum-containing and absorbable through raw or extensive wounds, applying it to large areas of broken skin is traditionally avoided or reserved for practitioner supervision, to limit systemic aluminum exposure.
- Constitution — traditionally cautioned against, or used with added care, in yin-deficiency and weak Spleen–Stomach digestion, and where damp-heat is not actually present.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose
Slightly toxic, primarily a concern with internal use, overdose, or absorption through large areas of broken skin. As with Ming Fan, the toxic component is the aluminum ion released from potassium aluminum sulfate; because Ku Fan is more concentrated (having lost its water of crystallization), its aluminum content per gram is higher than raw alum’s, reinforcing why internal dosing is kept small and topical use on intact, limited areas is preferred.
Modern toxicology on aluminum more broadly (not Ku Fan specifically) documents that chronic/cumulative aluminum exposure is associated with neurotoxic and other systemic effects, and that aluminum is cleared almost entirely by the kidneys, so accumulation risk rises with renal impairment. This general aluminum-safety literature supports, but does not itself test, the traditional practice of capping Ku Fan’s internal dose, duration, and area of topical application.
Note: multiple online sources lists Ku Fan’s toxicity simply as “toxic” without the “slight” qualifier used elsewhere and in this site’s own Ming Fan entry (小毒, “slightly toxic”). Herb-Drug Interactions
No well-established clinical herb–drug interactions specific to Ku Fan are documented. Because it is an aluminum-containing substance, practitioner awareness is reasonable for patients also taking other aluminum-containing products (e.g., aluminum-based antacids) to avoid cumulative aluminum intake, and extra caution is reasonable in significant renal impairment, since aluminum is cleared almost entirely by the kidneys. Is there modern research on Ku Fan (calcined alum, Alumen Praeparatum)?
Yes — mostly laboratory/in-vitro research directly comparing the two prepared forms, plus general alum and aluminum-toxicology literature, with no dedicated clinical trials of Ku Fan itself found. The research below is context for the traditional uses, not evidence of treatment efficacy.
- Alum vs. burnt alum, antioxidant/anti-inflammatory (in vitro, direct) — a study comparing raw alum and burnt/calcined alum (Ku Fan) found raw alum had stronger, concentration-dependent free-radical-scavenging (antioxidant) activity, while burnt alum had stronger anti-inflammatory (nitric-oxide-inhibiting) activity but greater cytotoxicity to skin cells at higher concentrations. The authors conclude the two forms should be distinguished for external use — a direct modern data point behind the traditional Ming Fan/Ku Fan distinction.

How is Ku Fan different from Ming Fan (raw alum)?
Ku Fan and Ming Fan are the same mineral, potassium aluminum sulfate, prepared differently. Ku Fan (“dried-out alum,” Alumen Praeparatum) is made by heating raw Ming Fan until it melts in its own water of crystallization and then continues drying into a white, puffed, honeycomb-textured mass, which is cooled and crushed to powder. Losing that water of crystallization is what changes its behavior: Ku Fan is drier and more concentrated, more purely astringent and hemostatic, gentler/less irritating to tissue, and largely reserved for topical use, whereas raw Ming Fan is used both topically (its primary use) and, in small internal doses, for wind-phlegm patterns such as epilepsy — an internal, phlegm-resolving action that is diminished after calcining. Raw alum can also act as a stomach irritant and, in excess, induce vomiting; the calcined form is markedly less likely to do so.
