What is Lang Du used for in Chinese medicine?

Classical and standard materia medica sources record it as pungent in flavor, neutral in temperature, and greatly toxic (大毒, dà dú), placing it among the small group of substances in the Chinese pharmacopoeia reserved for the most stubborn, treatment-resistant presentations and restricted to professional supervision.

Its documented traditional actions:

  • Dispels phlegm and disperses masses — classically indicated for scrofula (瘑盂, lǎ lì, tuberculous-type cervical lymph-node swelling) and for hardened abdominal accumulations and distension, framing it alongside phlegm-fluid–draining relatives such as Da Ji and Gan Sui, though its own use is centered on breaking up nodes and masses rather than draining generalized edema or ascites.
  • Kills parasites, applied topically — historically used externally, not internally, for scabies, ringworm-type skin conditions, and other parasitic or verminous skin disorders.

  • Lang Du is classified as a “greatly toxic” (大毒) substance in Chinese materia medica, and its toxicity is attributed to strongly irritant diterpenoid compounds concentrated in the root. Across its recognized botanical sources, these include tigliane/abietane/casbane-type diterpenoids and related esters in Euphorbia fischeriana/E. ebracteolata, and daphnane-type diterpenoids (e.g. gnidimacrin, the stelleralide series) in Stellera chamaejasme. (family Thymelaeaceae, daphne family — a source more typical of western/high-altitude China, sometimes distinguished in Chinese as 璃香狼毒, Ruì xiāng láng dú) as parallel accepted origins for the same traditional name, all sharing a similarly toxic, irritant root used the same way.
