Ba Dou is the archetypal “harsh expellant” of the Chinese materia medica — a violently purgative, acrid, hot and openly toxic substance recorded for cold-type accumulation blocking the intestines, for severe water accumulation, and, applied externally, for stubborn sores. It is classified in the Sacred Lotus among the Harsh Expellants, is spicy and hot in nature, is flagged toxic, and enters the Stomach, Large Intestine and Lung channels. Historically it belonged to the small group of emergency medicinals used only when milder options had failed, and only by an experienced practitioner.

Its documented traditional actions:

  • Unblocks and drastically purges cold accumulation — the classical indication is constipation with abdominal distention, fullness and pain arising from cold-type obstruction, where warm-purging rather than cold-purging was thought to be required. This is the action that placed it in emergency formulas rather than in routine practice.
  • Drives out water — recorded for ascites and severe edema, in the same “expel water” family as other drastic water-driving medicinals.

    • Why the figure is so small — croton seed material is dominated by an oil rich in tigliane diterpenoids (phorbol esters), which are among the most potent irritant and biologically active plant compounds known.     • Raw seed is not a usable material — the classical literature is unanimous that unprocessed croton seed was never given as-is. Modern analytical work confirms that traditional processing measurably lowers both the purgative effect and the measured phorbol-ester (phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate) and crotonic acid content of the seed, though the same study notes that the processing traditions had not previously been tested for effectiveness.   • Is Ba Dou safe? What are the contraindications?

    No — Ba Dou is one of the most dangerous substances in the entire materia medica, and every reference source treats it as restricted, professional-supervision-only material. The Sacred Lotus record carries an absolute pregnancy contraindication, noting documented teratogenic (birth-defect) effects, together with contraindication in weak or debilitated patients, the Qian Niu Zi incompatibility, and the classical instruction to avoid hot liquids alongside it.

    • Pregnancy — absolutely contraindicated. This is not a relative caution. Drastic purgatives are contraindicated in pregnancy as a class, and Ba Dou is the most drastic of them.
    • Debilitated, elderly, frail or paediatric patients — contraindicated. The recorded rationale is that a drastic purge is survivable only where there is substantial underlying strength.
    • Never combined with Qian Niu Zi — the recorded classical incompatibility (see the comparison section above).

  • How toxic is Ba Dou, and what are phorbol esters?

    Ba Dou is toxic in two distinct and separately documented ways: as an acute irritant poison, and as a laboratory-standard tumour promoter. Both trace to the same class of constituents — the tigliane diterpenoids, better known as phorbol esters, which are concentrated in the seed oil (croton oil).

    • Acute irritant toxicity — croton oil is a violent purgative and a severe irritant to skin, eyes and the gastrointestinal mucosa. Analytical work has quantified phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate and crotonic acid directly in croton seed powder and correlated their reduction with reduced purgative effect, confirming that these constituents are the active and toxic principles rather than incidental compounds.
    • Tumour promotion — the historically important point. Croton oil is the original tumour-promoting agent of experimental carcinogenesis. In the classical two-stage mouse-skin model, an initiating carcinogen alone produces few or no tumours, but repeated application of croton oil afterwards converts initiated cells into papillomas. The active promoter isolated from croton oil, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA, also written phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate or PMA), became — and remains — the standard laboratory tumour promoter worldwide. This is well-established, uncontested pharmacology.

  • Is there modern research on Ba Dou (Croton tiglium)?

    Yes — and it is unusual in that the herb’s most influential contribution to modern science is to cancer research methodology rather than to therapeutics. Croton oil and its purified phorbol esters underpin the two-stage carcinogenesis model that established the distinction between tumour initiation and tumour promotion. Alongside that, a phytochemical and pharmacological literature has developed around the plant itself.

    • Phytochemistry — a 2022 comprehensive review catalogues roughly 150 identified compounds from the seeds, stems, leaves and branches, including fatty acids, terpenoids, alkaloids and plant proteins, with the tigliane diterpenoids the most intensively studied class. The same review concludes that mechanistic evidence remains insufficient and that toxicity reduction is a prerequisite for any clinical development.
    • Tumour promotion (foundational) — the two-stage model using an initiating carcinogen followed by croton oil, and the isolation of TPA/PMA from croton oil as the standard promoter, remain reference points across carcinogenesis research; TPA is still routinely used as a positive control in inflammation and promotion assays.

  • Why is Ba Dou incompatible with Qian Niu Zi, and how does it compare with other purgatives?

    Ba Dou and Qian Niu Zi (morning glory seed / pharbitis) form one of the classical “Eighteen Incompatibilities” (shi ba fan) pairings — the traditional list of herb combinations held to be mutually antagonistic and therefore never to be combined. The Sacred Lotus records this pairing explicitly, with the relationship typed as “this herb antagonizes or is antagonized by” Qian Niu Zi. It is the only incompatibility pair recorded for Ba Dou in our data.

    • The traditional reasoning — both substances are drastic purgatives, but of opposite thermal nature (Ba Dou hot, Qian Niu Zi cold). The classical objection is not simply additive strength but a doctrine of mutual antagonism, in which the pairing was held to nullify or distort both actions while compounding harm.
