What is the typical dosage of Lian Xu?
Roughly 1.5–5 g in decoction — a small range, in keeping with a light, papery flower part rather than a dense root or seed. Published materia medica ranges cluster tightly at this low end, with some references extending the upper limit toward about 9 g. The stamen is added to the pot in the ordinary way and needs no special handling.
- In pill form the figures look very different. In this reference's own record for Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Metal Lock Pill to Stabilize the Essence), Lian Xu is listed at 60 g. That is a batch weight for grinding into pills alongside Lian Zi 120 g, Sha Yuan Zi 60 g, Qian Shi 60 g, Long Gu 30 g and Mu Li 30 g — not a single dose. Decoction and pill quantities are not interchangeable.
- As a tea — a pinch of the dried stamens steeped in hot water is a long-standing domestic preparation; the flavour is light and floral rather than bitter, unlike the plumule from the same plant.
- Quality — the material should be the intact golden filaments; the stamen is one of the lighter herbs by volume, so a small weight looks like a large handful.

Are there cautions for Lian Xu?
The main traditional caution is that astringents hold things in, so Lian Xu is not used where something needs to come out. Difficult or painful urination, urinary retention, and constipation are the standard contraindications given for the herb; more broadly, binding herbs are avoided where an external pathogen, damp-heat, or excess heat is still active, because securing the exterior of a pattern that has not been cleared can trap it.
- Match the pattern, not the symptom. Seminal emission or urinary frequency arising from damp-heat pouring downward is a different pattern from Kidney deficiency failing to hold, and calls for clearing rather than astringing. The tradition treats this as the herb's principal misuse.
- Undiagnosed symptoms need assessment. Urinary frequency, incontinence and abnormal discharge have many medical causes. This entry is reference information about a traditional herb, not guidance for self-treatment.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding — no specific traditional prohibition is recorded for the stamen, but herbal use in pregnancy belongs with a qualified practitioner.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose
Low. Lotus stamen is a food-adjacent material — it is dried and drunk as a floral herbal tea across East Asia — and no significant toxicity is reported for it in the traditional literature at the small doses used. No toxicity signal specific to the stamen appears in the modern literature either; the published work on this part is chemical and preclinical rather than toxicological.
On higenamine and anti-doping, specifically for the stamen. This reference's Lian Zi Xin entry records that lotus plumule contains higenamine, a compound the World Anti-Doping Agency has prohibited since 2017. That finding should not be transferred to the stamen without evidence, and the available evidence does not support transferring it. In a UPLC/QToF-MS comparison of the six lotus parts listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia — seed, leaf, plumule, stamen, receptacle and rhizome node — higenamine was assigned to the leaf and plumule only, and the same study reported that alkaloids had not previously been detected in the stamen at all (PMID 33806084). A separate quantitative study of alkaloid distribution across petal, receptacle and stamen of the lotus flower measured ten aporphine and benzylisoquinoline alkaloids and did not include higenamine among them (PMID 27447599). A review of higenamine-containing plants written specifically for the anti-doping question names Nelumbo nucifera as a source plant but does not identify the stamen as the part responsible (PMID 35161335). In short: higenamine is documented in the lotus plumule and leaf; it is not documented in the stamen. That is an absence of positive findings rather than a proven absence of the compound, and athletes subject to testing should treat any lotus-derived product cautiously and check with their anti-doping authority.

Does Lian Xu interact with medications?
No herb–drug interactions have been documented for lotus stamen. There are no clinical interaction reports and no pharmacokinetic studies on this part of the plant; its characteristic constituents are flavonol glycosides (chiefly kaempferol derivatives) rather than the alkaloids that drive interaction concerns elsewhere in the lotus. Absence of documented interactions is not evidence of safety — it reflects how little the stamen has been studied.
- Do not read across from the plumule. The interaction literature that exists for the lotus concerns neferine and higenamine, both concentrated in the plumule; neither has been reported as a stamen constituent.

Is there modern research on Lian Xu (lotus stamen, Stamen Nelumbinis)?
Yes, but far less than for the leaf or the plumule — and it is all laboratory or animal work, not clinical evidence for any traditional indication. The stamen's chemical signature is flavonoids: an early phytochemical study isolated seven known flavonoids from the stamens, most of them kaempferol glycosides, with free kaempferol the most broadly active in the radical-scavenging assays used (PMID 12735685). Later work confirmed flavonoids as the characteristic and defining constituent class of Nelumbinis stamen (PMID 25444443).
- The stamen is chemically distinct from the rest of the plant — a UPLC/QToF-MS comparison of six lotus medicinal parts characterised 171 compounds and singled out the stamen as containing the greatest diversity of flavonoids and terpenoids of any part, while noting that research on it is limited (PMID 33806084). A machine-learning study profiling five lotus parts reached the same conclusion from a different direction: the parts are chemically separable and should not be treated as interchangeable material (PMID 36228477).
- Fatigue and stress, animal model — an aqueous stamen extract given by gavage reduced skeletal muscle dysfunction and fatigue in mice exposed to chronic restraint stress, with lowered serum corticosterone and restored Sestrin2 expression proposed as the mechanism (PMID 36529943). A mouse study; it does not establish an effect in people.
- Cell-line work — an ethanol extract of lotus stamen reduced proliferation and induced apoptosis in a human colon carcinoma cell line (PMID 28454279). In-vitro only, and not a cancer claim.
- Alkaloid distribution across the flower — a quantitative LC-MS method measured ten alkaloids separately in petal, receptacle and stamen of the lotus flower, which is the study that makes part-specific statements about this plant possible at all (PMID 27447599).
Taken together, the modern literature establishes that the stamen is a flavonoid-rich material chemically unlike the seed, plumule or leaf, and offers preliminary antioxidant and anti-fatigue findings. It does not test the herb's traditional use for securing the essence, and no human trials of Lian Xu were located.

How is Lian Xu different from the other lotus medicinals?
Lian Xu is the astringent one. Where He Ye (the leaf) clears Summerheat and Lian Zi Xin (the plumule) drains Heart fire, the stamen binds — it holds essence and fluid in, and is reached for when the pattern is leakage from Kidney deficiency rather than heat. This is the cleanest way to keep the lotus group straight: one plant, several parts, and the part decides the action.

That is why formulas that need both a supplementing and a securing action carry the seed and the stamen side by side rather than choosing between them.
Which formulas use Lian Xu?
