What is Ming Fan (Alum) used for in Chinese medicine?
Ming Fan is used mainly as a topical substance — applied externally to resolve toxicity, dry dampness, and stop itching and bleeding in skin and mucosal conditions such as eczema, damp-heat rashes, sores, and canker sores. In much smaller internal doses it also dries dampness and expels phlegm, stops bleeding, treats chronic diarrhea, and clears damp-heat jaundice.
Its main traditional actions:
- Resolves toxicity, dries dampness, stops itching (topical — primary use) — eczema and other damp-type rashes, scabies, ringworm, sores and carbuncles, canker sores/mouth ulcers, and sore or swollen throat, typically as a wash or applied powder.

What is the typical dosage of Ming Fan (Alum)?
External use is dosed far more generously than internal use. Externally, an appropriate amount is ground to a fine powder and applied directly, or dissolved in water (roughly 15–30 g) as a wash or soak. Internally — a distinct, dose-capped use — sources give about 0.5–1.5 g in decoction, or 0.6–3 g in pills/powder (occasionally a small ~0.5–1 g chip swallowed directly), always crushed/powdered first.
The internal dose ceiling is deliberately low — a small fraction of the external amount — reflecting Ming Fan’s classification as slightly toxic and its aluminum content. Internal use is traditionally kept to small doses, short courses, and professional supervision.
Note: sources give slightly different internal ranges (0.5–1.5 g decocted vs. 0.6–3 g in pills/powder vs. a ~0.5–1 g swallowed chip). Are there cautions for Ming Fan (Alum)? Is it safe?
Ming Fan is classified as slightly toxic, particularly with internal use or overdose, so internal use is traditionally kept to the small doses above, for short courses, and under a qualified practitioner. Topical use at appropriate concentrations is the primary and generally better-tolerated application.
- Overdose (internal) — can cause gastrointestinal mucosal irritation/ulceration, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; severe overdose has been associated with shock.
- Constitution — traditionally contraindicated, or used with added caution, in weak/deficient digestion (Spleen–Stomach deficiency) and where damp-heat is not actually present, since its drying, cold, astringent nature can aggravate deficiency.
- Duration — not intended for prolonged internal use; see Toxicity below for the aluminum-accumulation rationale.

Chinese Herb Toxicity & Overdose
Slightly toxic (小毒), especially internally and in overdose. The toxic component is the aluminum ion released from potassium aluminum sulfate. Reported overdose effects include gastrointestinal ulceration, vomiting, and diarrhea, with shock in severe cases — consistent with why internal dosing is kept far below external/topical amounts and limited to short courses.
Modern toxicology on aluminum more broadly (not Ming Fan specifically) documents that chronic/cumulative aluminum exposure — from diet, antacids, cookware, and other everyday sources — is associated with neurotoxic and other systemic effects, and that aluminum is cleared almost entirely by the kidneys, so accumulation risk rises with renal impairment. This general aluminum-safety literature supports, but does not itself test, the traditional practice of capping Ming Fan’s internal dose and duration.

Is there modern research on Ming Fan (Alumen, potassium aluminum sulfate)?
Yes — mostly laboratory/in-vitro and animal-formula research, with no dedicated clinical trials of Ming Fan itself found. The research below is context for the traditional uses, not evidence of treatment efficacy.
- Antimicrobial (in vitro, direct) — potash alum inhibited growth of Vibrio cholerae (O1 and O139) and Shigella dysenteriae in laboratory culture in a dose- and pH-dependent manner (acidifying the medium from pH ~6 to ~4), with no growth detected after 24 hours at higher tested concentrations. Laboratory evidence only, relevant background for alum’s traditional wash/anti-diarrheal-adjacent reputation, not a treatment claim for cholera or dysentery.
- Antioxidant vs. anti-inflammatory (in vitro, direct) — a comparison of alum (Ming Fan) and burnt/calcined alum (Ku Fan) found alum had stronger, concentration-dependent free-radical-scavenging (antioxidant) activity, while burnt alum had stronger anti-inflammatory (nitric-oxide-inhibiting) activity but greater cytotoxicity to skin cells at higher concentrations — a data point consistent with the traditional distinction between the two prepared forms.

How is Ming Fan different from Ku Fan (calcined/burnt alum)?
Ming Fan (raw alum) and Ku Fan (Alumen Praeparatum, calcined/“burnt” alum) come from the same mineral but are processed differently and used differently. Ku Fan is made by heating (calcining) Ming Fan, driving off its water of crystallization; it is the drier, more purely astringent, topical-only preparation, traditionally favored for weeping sores and slow-healing wounds. Ming Fan is the source form used both topically (its primary use) and, in small doses, internally for phlegm/epilepsy, bleeding, chronic diarrhea, and jaundice.
In-vitro research comparing the two forms found alum (Ming Fan) had stronger antioxidant (free-radical-scavenging) activity, while burnt alum (Ku Fan) had stronger anti-inflammatory activity but was more cytotoxic to cells at higher concentrations — a modern data point consistent with the traditional distinction between the two prepared forms (see Research, below).
