Ich habe ein älteres Familienmitglied nach einem schweren Sturz ins Krankenhaus gebracht. Der Nachmittag, den wir dort verbrachten, ist der Grund für die Existenz dieses Abschnitts.
In 2020 I left a high-pressure leadership role in tech, moved to Santa Cruz, and started the Master's program in Chinese medicine at Five Branches University. I studied, hiked, surfed, and practiced martial arts four days a week.
The coursework changed how I understood balance, energy, health, and healing, and what it takes to bring body, mind, and spirit back into alignment. Some of what I learned had been practiced for 2,000 years before anyone ran a trial on it. A practice can earn trust over that long a span, whether or not a study exists.
The waiting room
We waited with about 50 other people for over three hours. No windows, fluorescent lights, and air conditioning stuck near 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The nurses were trying to bring the elderly patients blankets. People sat there freezing, sick, and miserable. Then we waited again in a different room for the doctor. When he finally saw us, he wrote a prescription and sent us out inside ten minutes.
What modern medicine does well
I have deep appreciation for modern Western medicine. Emergency care, surgery, diagnostic labs: it handles those extraordinarily well and helps enormous numbers of people. If you break a hip, you want a hospital, and you want it fast.
But it is rarely preventive. It treats the symptoms of a disease more than its cause, and it is not built to look at the whole system. It is organized into specialists, each responsible for one part of the body. Almost no one in that building is responsible for keeping the whole body well, day to day.
Agency
We have more control over our own health than we are usually led to believe.
It is comfortable to think we can live however we like, then take a pill for whatever comes of it. But most of what shapes your health happens long before a prescription. What you eat, how you sleep, how you move, how much morning light you get, how you handle stress, whether you have people. These choices carry a great deal, and every one of them is yours.
You can act on this: through the therapies, the protocols, and the simple daily actions that have a profound effect on your health and how you age. This section is for anyone who wants to learn, grow, and do what they can to be healthy and vital, wherever they are starting from.
How this gets written
The same way everything else here does. Multiple sources, cross-referenced, cited so you can check us. Every claim is graded at its true strength, and the limits are stated plainly. A strong result is one thing; whether to act on it is your call, and we keep the two apart. Where no one has studied something, we say so. We do not invent a confident answer.

Sacred Lotus has published Chinese medicine reference material since 2001. Integrative pages are held to the same standard as the herb and formula library: cite the source, grade the claim at its real strength, and say where the research has not looked. This page is educational and it is not medical advice. Last reviewed and updated August 10, 2026.
