Classical Chinese medicine works with five seasons, not four, and pairs each with one of the Five Elements and an organ system. That pairing is where the practical counsel for each part of the year comes from.
- Spring (Wood, Liver). The character is upward and outward. Rise a little earlier, loosen the body with gentle movement, and let winter's heavy, warming food give way to lighter, fresher fare and young greens.
- Summer (Fire, Heart). The season of maximum yang. Stay active, allow later evenings, favor cooling and watery foods, and keep engagement and joy in measure while avoiding depletion in extreme heat.
- Late summer (Earth, Spleen). A fifth season the scheme places between summer and autumn, tied to digestion. Eat simple cooked food and keep an unhurried pace.
- Autumn (Metal, Lung). Begin conserving: move your bedtime earlier and turn to moistening foods against the drying air.
- Winter (Water, Kidney). The season of storage. Sleep more, keep warm, and conserve rather than expend, storing the deep essence to draw on in spring.

Blood pressure runs about 3 mmHg higher in winter than summer
Blood pressure, cholesterol and waistlines tend to run a little higher in winter than in summer. Across nearly a quarter of a million people, winter blood pressure was about 3 points higher on the top number, which is part of why heart trouble clusters in the cold months.
In a pooled cross-sectional analysis of 237,979 participants from 24 studies across 15 countries, cardiovascular risk factors showed a consistent seasonal pattern of higher levels in winter and lower in summer, in both hemispheres. The northern-hemisphere winter-to-summer differences were 2.9 mmHg systolic and 1.4 mmHg diastolic blood pressure, 0.26 kg/m2 body-mass index, 0.24 inches (0.6 cm) waist circumference, 3.9 mg/dL (0.10 mmol/L) total cholesterol, 4.3 mg/dL (0.11 mmol/L) LDL cholesterol and 1.3 mg/dL (0.07 mmol/L) glucose. Because it compares different people measured in different seasons rather than following individuals, it describes a population pattern rather than proving that season drives an individual's numbers.
Winter is the season to hold the line on the ordinary levers rather than let them slip: keep moving on the cold, dark days, keep meals steady, and if your blood pressure is monitored, expect it to read a touch higher in the cold and read the trend across the year rather than a single winter measurement.

Daylight and temperature move blood pressure as two independent signals
Blood pressure does not only follow the cold; it also follows the length of the day. In people wearing temperature sensors, warmer skin temperature came with lower daytime pressure, and longer daylight hours came with different night-time and early-morning pressure, with temperature and daylight each mattering on their own.
In 1,897 patients who wore personal environmental-temperature loggers during 24-hour ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring, multivariate models adjusting for age, sex, body-mass, treatment and daylight hours found daytime systolic pressure negatively related to personal temperature (-0.14 mmHg per unit; 95% CI -0.25 to -0.02), night-time pressure positively related to daylight hours (0.63; 0.37 to 0.90) and the morning surge negatively related to daylight hours (-0.54; -0.87 to -0.21). The authors concluded that personal temperature and seasonality, expressed as daylight hours, are two independent predictors of ambulatory blood pressure. It is observational, so it establishes association rather than cause.
This is the measurable core of what the tradition means by living with the light: daylight length has a real physiological signature. Treat it as one more reason to get outdoor light through the year, and, if you track blood pressure, to expect seasonal drift rather than a fixed number.

Bright light lifts winter depression, with about 40% more people responding
For winter depression, sitting in front of a bright light box most mornings helps more than a dummy light. In pooled trials, people were about 40% more likely to respond, a small-to-medium benefit that points clearly in one direction.
This meta-analysis pooled 19 randomized controlled trials of bright light therapy for seasonal affective disorder, with 610 patients contributing depression-rating data and 559 contributing response data. Bright light was superior to placebo with a standardized mean difference of -0.37 (95% CI -0.63 to -0.12) on depression ratings and a risk ratio of 1.42 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.85) for treatment response. The authors noted moderate heterogeneity, small-to-medium sample sizes and moderate-to-high risk of bias, and called for larger high-quality trials, which is why the finding sits at moderate rather than strong.

Sleep
Winter sleep runs up to 60 minutes longer, with about 30 minutes more REM
People tend to sleep a bit longer and get more dream (REM) sleep in winter than in spring or summer. In a year-long clinic study, winter sleep ran up to an hour longer, though only the REM and deep-sleep changes were statistically solid.
In a retrospective analysis of three-night polysomnography from a Berlin neuropsychiatric sleep clinic, 188 patients (mean age 46.6, 52% female, seen for insomnia, depression or breathing disorders) were averaged by month across the year. Total sleep time was up to 60 minutes longer in winter than summer but not statistically significant; REM sleep was about 30 minutes longer in winter than spring (p = 0.009, about 5% of total sleep time, p = 0.011); REM latency was about 25 minutes shorter in autumn than spring (p = 0.010); and slow-wave (deep) sleep was 30 to 50 minutes shorter in autumn, significant as a percentage of total sleep (a roughly 10% relative drop, p = 0.017). The sample was clinical rather than healthy, so the effect in untroubled sleepers is not established.

A long-used tradition is not the same as a measured mechanism, and here it does not need to be, because the practice it points to stands on its own support.
Living With the Seasons
