Several of these ingredients are old foods in a modern form. Spirulina was harvested and eaten by the Aztecs from Lake Texcoco, chlorella was cultivated as a food crop in post-war Japan, and wheatgrass juice has been a health food since the mid-twentieth century. The powder concentrates foods people have eaten for a long time.
The pitch is coverage: one serving standing in for the vegetables missed on a busy day. The label is where that pitch has to be checked, because most of these products are sold as a proprietary blend, which prints the combined weight of a long ingredient list without giving the dose of any single one.

The base is dried, milled plant matter: vegetables, leafy greens, cereal grasses like wheatgrass and barley grass, fruit, and often algae such as spirulina and chlorella. How It Works
A greens powder works, to the extent it works, by delivering concentrated plant compounds in a form the gut absorbs. Dry the juice or pulp of vegetables and fruit, mill it fine, and the carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E and folate come along, which is why a daily scoop lifts the blood levels of those nutrients measurably. For someone whose intake of these nutrients is low, the powder raises them. The added synthetic vitamins and minerals do the job a multivitamin does, filling specific gaps at a set dose.
The powder does not reproduce a vegetable. Most of the fiber and the water are gone, and with them the slow release and the fullness that make whole plants behave the way the insulin and glucose page describes. The micronutrients transfer; the food matrix does not. That split is why a greens powder is a top-up and not a health upgrade, and why the marker studies and the outcome studies point in different directions.
What It Does
A daily greens powder does one thing the trials show clearly: it raises blood levels of the plant nutrients it carries. In a four-week trial, a fruit-and-vegetable concentrate raised blood beta-carotene several-fold and folate by about 174%, and lowered homocysteine by about a fifth along with some markers of oxidative stress, with no change to what people ate. A systematic review of twenty-two trials found the same pattern across commercial products: blood antioxidant vitamins and folate up, oxidative-stress markers down. For someone whose intake of these nutrients is low, those rises are the point of the product.
Those marker changes have not been shown to improve health. A controlled trial gave people with metabolic syndrome the capsules for eight weeks and measured how their arteries opened and their blood sugar and cholesterol; nothing moved against placebo. Whole vegetables carry the long-run outcome evidence, and they carry it with the fiber and food matrix a scoop leaves behind.
A greens powder is a shortcut to the blood chemistry of eating vegetables, and it stops there.
How settled is this? The marker rises are consistent and believable. The gap is that most of the direct research is short, measures blood chemistry rather than disease, and is run on branded products, sometimes by people affiliated with the maker. The strongest supported reading is that these products are absorbed and can lift nutrient status, without being shown to deliver what eating vegetables delivers. The practical move is to read the label for per-ingredient doses and third-party testing, and treat the powder as a top-up for a diet short on plants, not an upgrade to one that already has them.

Total up the vitamins and minerals across everything you take. Heart And Vascular
No improvement in vessel function, blood sugar or cholesterol over 8 weeks in metabolic syndrome
Over eight weeks in people with metabolic syndrome, fruit-and-vegetable capsules did not improve how their arteries opened, their blood sugar, insulin, cholesterol or weight compared with a placebo.
Ali and colleagues ran a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 64 adults with metabolic syndrome, each taking two blends of encapsulated juice powder concentrate (one with added berry powders) and placebo for 8 weeks each. The primary outcome, flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery measured after a glucose load, showed no significant between-group difference with 8 weeks of daily treatment, and there were no significant treatment effects on glucose, insulin, lipids or body weight. This is a controlled test of functional and metabolic outcomes, and the concentrate that raised blood antioxidants in marker studies did not move vessel function or metabolic measures here. Sixty-four people over 8 weeks is a modest trial.

How it works
Blood folate rose about 174% and homocysteine fell about a fifth on a fruit-and-vegetable concentrate
Four weeks on a fruit-and-vegetable concentrate pushed blood levels of plant antioxidants and folate up sharply and lowered homocysteine by about a fifth, without anyone changing what they ate.
In a 28-day double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 60 Japanese adults (mean age around 28) took encapsulated mixed fruit and vegetable juice concentrates or placebo. Against placebo, serum beta-carotene rose 528%, lycopene 80.2% and alpha-tocopherol 39.5%, serum folate rose 174.3% with a correlated 19.9% fall in plasma homocysteine, and markers of oxidative stress fell (serum lipid peroxides down 10.5%, urinary 8-OHdG down 21.1%). Effects were similar in smokers. This shows the phytonutrients in the capsules are bioavailable and reach the blood. It measured blood chemistry over four weeks, not health outcomes, and one author is affiliated with the product tested.

Across 22 trials, blood antioxidant vitamins and folate rose and oxidative-stress markers fell
Pooling the trials, these concentrates dependably lift blood antioxidant vitamins and folate and lower some oxidative-stress markers, while anything about heart disease or immunity is not yet settled.
Esfahani and colleagues systematically searched MEDLINE and EMBASE and identified 22 reports using commercially available concentrated mixed fruit and vegetable products. Daily consumption significantly raised serum beta-carotene, vitamins C and E and folate and lowered homocysteine and markers of protein, lipid and DNA oxidation; changes in inflammation, immunity and endothelial function were called promising. No serious adverse effects were reported. The reviewers stressed that the trials varied widely in design, population and outcome measures, were run on commercial branded products, and mostly measured blood markers, and they called for larger randomized placebo-controlled trials before health conclusions are drawn.

Digestion
A greens powder enriched two probiotic species over four weeks and was well tolerated
Four weeks of a greens powder nudged a couple of probiotic bacteria upward and was well tolerated, and a measure of digestive comfort improved but the change was not statistically reliable.
La Monica and colleagues randomized 30 healthy adults (15 men, 15 women) to AG1 or placebo for 4 weeks, with stool sampling for microbiome analysis, digestive quality-of-life questionnaires and blood safety panels. AG1 enriched Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, which the authors note likely stem from the probiotic species already in the product, plus two other taxa, while not negatively affecting digestive quality of life, bowel frequency or stool consistency. The digestive quality-of-life score improved 62.5% (p=0.058, d=0.73), short of significance, against a 50% reduction in placebo. Clinical safety markers were unchanged. Two authors are employees of the product maker, so this is an early industry-run tolerability signal rather than a demonstrated health benefit.

The Chinese Medicine View
Chinese medicine puts digestion at the center of how food becomes vitality. The Spleen and Stomach receive what you eat and transform it: the Stomach ripens the food, and the Spleen lifts the clear, useful part upward to be made into Qi and Blood, sending the turbid part down. Food is not nourishing because of the nutrients it lists on a label; it is nourishing to the degree the Spleen can transform it into something the body uses. That is a different question from what a chemical assay measures, and it is the lens the tradition brings to a product like this.
Two ideas in the tradition bear on the greens-powder question. The first is the tradition's preference for fresh, living food, what the classical texts frame as clear and simple eating that supports the Spleen without burdening it. A vegetable eaten close to its whole form is living food in this sense; a concentrated dried extract is a step removed from it, and the framework would not treat the two as equivalent even where a lab shows the same carotenoid content.
The second is the tradition's steady caution against forcing a single concentrated thing past what the body needs, which maps onto the modern point that stacking high doses is not automatically better. A practitioner would also fit the advice to the person: someone with a weak Spleen, read in bloating, loose stools and fatigue after eating, is often guided toward cooked and warm food over raw and cold, and many greens powders are taken cold in water, which can sit poorly with that constitution.
This is a lens for connecting a modern product to concepts the tradition has reasoned about for a long time, not a claim that Chinese medicine tested these powders. The evidence for what they do stands on the trials.

In 52 spirulina and chlorella products, metals met limits but aluminum ran high with drug residues
Sochacka and colleagues analyzed 52 commercial spirulina and chlorella products (29 conventional, 23 organic) by ICP-MS and LC-MS/MS. All samples complied with EU regulatory limits for toxic metals, with aluminum, manganese, strontium and zinc the dominant trace elements, and the calculated aluminum contribution to the tolerable weekly intake was flagged as a particular concern. A wide range of pharmaceutical residues was detected, caffeine most often, then metronidazole, carbamazepine, benzocaine and tramadol, reflecting the high biosorption capacity of microalgae grown in open water. No significant difference was seen between organic and conventional products. 8 of 18 algae supplements carried cyanotoxins, 4 of them above the adult safe daily limit
Roy-Lachapelle and colleagues screened 18 commercial products containing Spirulina or Aphanizomenon flos-aquae for total and individual microcystins, anatoxins, cylindrospermopsin, saxitoxin and BMAA using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Eight of the 18 contained cyanotoxins, and four of those exceeded the adult tolerable daily intake for microcystins (a fifth brand exceeded only the lower child limit). The products generally contain non-toxic cyanobacteria, but cultivation in natural waters without adequate quality control allows contamination by toxin-producing species from the environment. The authors concluded this reinforces the need for better quality control and consumer awareness. Vitamin K shifts warfarin control mainly above about 150 micrograms a day, so keep intake steady
Violi and colleagues systematically reviewed 2 dietary interventional trials and 9 observational studies of dietary vitamin K and anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists. Evidence was conflicting: some studies found a negative correlation between vitamin K intake and INR, others suggested a minimum intake is needed for stable anticoagulation, with an effect detectable mainly above about 150 micrograms a day (median intakes ranged 76 to 217 micrograms a day). The available evidence does not support restricting dietary vitamin K when starting warfarin; maintaining a stable intake and avoiding wide swings is the better strategy. 82% of 44 tested supplements had inaccurate labels and none were third-party certified
Crawford and colleagues purchased 44 weight-loss dietary supplements from retailers on 12 US military installations and verified label accuracy against the Supplement Facts panel using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thirty-six products (82%) had inaccurate labels, 27 (61%) had listed ingredients not detected on analysis, 16 (36%) contained hidden ingredients, 91% scored a no-go on the Operation Supplement Safety scorecard, and none carried a third-party certification seal. The proprietary blend hides the dose
A proprietary blend prints the combined weight of a group of ingredients, so a panel can list twenty superfoods under one number and reveal nothing about how much of each is present. The practical effect is that you cannot tell a meaningful dose from a sprinkle, and a product can list an impressive ingredient near an amount too small to do anything. Prefer a label that gives amounts per ingredient, and read a long blend list as marketing until the doses are shown.
Algae ingredients can carry contaminants
Spirulina and chlorella are grown in water and take up what is in it. In one analysis of 18 algae supplements, 8 carried cyanobacterial toxins and 4 of those were above tolerable daily limits, and a separate survey of 52 spirulina and chlorella products found metals within legal limits but a notable aluminum load and traces of pharmaceuticals, with organic products no cleaner than conventional. This applies to products that contain algae, and an independent testing seal is the practical safeguard. If you are pregnant, the caution is higher.
Vitamin K and blood thinners
Greens powders built on kale, spinach and broccoli can carry meaningful vitamin K, which is the vitamin warfarin is balanced against. A systematic review found dietary vitamin K shifts anticoagulation mainly at higher intakes, and the sensible course is steadiness, not avoidance. If you take warfarin, the thing to manage is a sudden change: starting or stopping a daily scoop can move your INR, so keep intake consistent and tell whoever manages your INR that you are adding it.
It is a top-up, not a vegetable replacement
Drying removes most of the fiber and water, so a scoop delivers concentrated micronutrients without the bulk, fullness and slow release of whole vegetables, and it is those that carry the long-run outcome evidence. Treating a greens powder as a license to skip vegetables trades the part that is proven for the part that is convenient. Use it to add to a plant-light diet, not to stand in for plants.
