What It Is
Resting heart rate is how many times your heart beats in a minute while you are awake, still and calm. It reflects your cardiovascular fitness, and how hard your body is working to keep going today. A fit, rested body tends to beat slowly and steadily. A body that is deconditioned, stressed, dehydrated, short on sleep or fighting an infection tends to beat faster.
The number sits low and stable when things are going well, rises when they are not, and falls with training. Most of the outcome research below is observational, so a faster pulse marks the state of the body more than it predicts a future one.
How To Measure It
The manual method costs nothing:
- Sit or lie still for about five minutes.
- Find your pulse at the wrist below the thumb, or at the side of the neck.
- Count every beat for a full 60 seconds.
A full-minute count beats a 15-second count multiplied by four, because a short count magnifies any error. The steadiest reading is taken first thing, before getting out of bed and before coffee, at the same time of day each time you repeat it.
A wearable or a chest strap does the same job automatically. Most report an overnight or early-morning average, steadier than any single daytime count. The major brands track heart rate well, so the resting figure a wearable reports is usually reliable for following your trend over weeks.
What counts as normal is a wide band. For most healthy adults, 60 to 100 beats per minute covers it, and fitter people often sit in the 50s to low 60s. Children and teenagers run faster, and the average falls through adulthood as a habit of exercise builds and rises again with deconditioning. A number inside the normal band is not automatically neutral: the risk research below climbs smoothly across the whole range, with no threshold at 100.
What The Number Means
Pooling 46 cohorts and more than a million people, each 10 beats per minute higher resting heart rate tracked with about 9 percent more death from any cause. The risk climbed in a straight line from about 45 beats per minute upward. A separate meta-analysis of 87 studies found the same upward relationship for cardiovascular disease, heart failure and stroke. Heart failure climbed steepest, at about 18 percent per 10 beats per minute. Lower and steadier is the direction linked with a longer life, across the whole normal range.
For a person tracking themselves, the trend carries more than any single reading. In nearly 30,000 Norwegian adults measured a decade apart, a resting heart rate that climbed over those years tracked with more heart-disease death, while a single snapshot said less. This is an association, and its limits are the point:
A rising resting heart rate marks higher risk, but it is an association. In the same Norwegian study, a rate that fell over the decade showed no matching drop in deaths. Exercise reliably lowers the number, yet no trial has shown that lowering it removes the risks it is linked to. Treat a high or rising pulse as a prompt to look at fitness, sleep and stress. Driving the figure down on its own has not been shown to change the outcome.
Day to day, the number moves for ordinary reasons. Coffee, alcohol, a poor night, a hot room, dehydration and stress all lift it, so one high morning is not a signal. A rise held over weeks or years is.
A low resting heart rate is usually good news. In a fit person, and especially an endurance athlete, a rate in the 40s reflects a heart that fills well and a pacemaker that has adapted to training. A low rate that comes with dizziness, faintness or breathlessness means something else. That case, along with the other situations that call for a second look, is covered in the cautions below.

How To Improve It
Resting heart rate is one of the few readouts here that also responds to training. Across 191 controlled trials, regular exercise lowered it. Endurance work and yoga lowered it significantly in both men and women, and the drop was largest in the people who started highest. Part of that change is intrinsic. In mice, training reshapes the sinus node, the heart's own pacemaker, so a trained heart beats slower even when the nerves to it are blocked. Three other things move the number:
- Sleep. Short and broken sleep raises resting heart rate; a run of good nights settles it.
- Slow breathing. Breathing at about six breaths a minute shifts autonomic tone toward the slower side within minutes. Our breathwork and HRV page has the protocol.
- Alcohol and late-day caffeine. Both lift resting heart rate for hours, so an evening drink or an afternoon coffee often shows up as a higher reading the next morning. Easing off lets it settle.
None of these is a quick fix. The aerobic base is what shifts the baseline, over weeks.

The Chinese Medicine View
Chinese medicine has taken the pulse for two thousand years, and its reading takes in far more than a rate. The Heart is said to house the Shen, the mind and spirit. A pulse that is calm, even and unhurried reflects a settled Shen and a Heart at ease. A pulse that is rapid, thin or scattered is read as agitation, heat or depletion of the body's reserves. The rate, the 至數 or arrival count, is one element the practitioner notes, alongside the depth, width, strength, rhythm and quality of the pulse in three positions on each wrist.
This is why counting your own rate and having your pulse taken by a practitioner are different acts. A rate you can take yourself. The tradition treats any single sign as a fragment, meaningful only where several signs converge. A fast or slow count on its own is one thread in a larger picture.

A low rate with symptoms is different from a fit low rate
A slow resting pulse in a fit person is usually a sign of good conditioning. A slow rate that comes with dizziness, faintness, unusual breathlessness, chest discomfort or fatigue out of proportion to effort is a reason to talk to a clinician, because it can reflect a pacemaker or conduction problem rather than fitness.
A very high rate, or one that will not settle, is a reason to get checked
A resting rate persistently above about 100 beats per minute at rest, or one that climbs and stays up without an obvious cause like illness or stimulants, is a reason to see a doctor rather than to keep measuring. Sudden palpitations, a pounding or racing heart with faintness, or chest pressure need prompt medical attention.
An irregular rhythm makes the count unreliable
Atrial fibrillation and other irregular rhythms make both manual counting and many automatic wrist devices inaccurate, because the beats are uneven. If your device repeatedly flags an irregular heartbeat, treat that as a reason to see a doctor rather than a number to track.
Some medications set the rate for you
Beta blockers, other rate-controlling drugs and thyroid medication move resting heart rate directly, so on these the number reflects the dose as much as your fitness and cannot be read as a fitness marker on its own. Do not change any prescription on the basis of a home reading; take the readings to your prescriber instead.
It is a signal, not a diagnosis
Resting heart rate points at the state of the body; it does not name a cause. A reading that is unusual for you is information for a conversation and a prompt to rest or check in, not a verdict. If tracking it makes you measure more often and worry more, that is a good reason to step back to a weekly glance.

My resting heart rate jumped for a few days, should I worry?
A short-lived rise above your own baseline is usually the body responding to something ordinary. Common triggers are a poor night, a hard workout, a drinking evening, dehydration, stress or the early stage of an infection. In smartwatch studies a resting pulse rising several beats above baseline was one of the earliest signs of illness, sometimes days before symptoms. That makes it a useful prompt to rest, hydrate and pay attention to how you feel. Read it as one signal among several. A rise that holds for weeks, or one paired with symptoms like breathlessness or palpitations, is the kind to take to a clinician.
