Supplement: BPC-157

My Plan

Findings & Outcomes

Preliminary

What It Is

BPC-157 stands for Body Protection Compound 157. It is a chain of fifteen amino acids, a pentadecapeptide, and its sequence copies part of a larger protective protein identified in human gastric juice. It is made in a laboratory, and researchers have studied this synthesized fragment since the 1990s. It resists stomach acid, which is unusual for a peptide.

It is sold online as a capsule, an oral liquid, or a powder for injection, for a long list of uses: healing tendons, ligaments, and muscle after injury, easing joint and tendon pain, healing the gut lining, and recovering faster from surgery. Almost all of the support for those uses comes from animal experiments and cell studies. It reaches buyers as a research chemical sold for laboratory use.

Anatomy

1The peptide

BPC-157 is a short synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids. Its sequence copies a stretch of a larger protein found in human gastric juice, the fluid that protects and repairs the stomach lining. The lab-made fragment is what is studied and sold; the full natural protein it copies part of is a different molecule. Because it survives stomach acid, sellers argue it can work as a pill you swallow. That is their main case for an oral form.

2The forms sold

It is sold as oral capsules and liquids, and as a powder that buyers reconstitute and inject under the skin or near an injured tendon or joint. Most of the marketing centers on the injectable form.

What It Does

Researchers gave BPC-157 to rats and mice with surgically created injuries, by injection and in drinking water, then measured the repair. The animal doses give no guide to a human amount. In rats it speeds the healing of a surgically cut Achilles tendon and improves the recovery of movement afterward. In the same model it improves the healing of a cut knee ligament and of crushed muscle. In rat models of gut injury it heals lesions and closes fistulas, the abnormal channels that form between the bowel and nearby organs.

The animal healing signal is consistent across many studies, though it comes from a small number of laboratories, and it is the reason BPC-157 is sold. These results have not been reproduced in any human trial.

A healed wound in a rat means only that the effect may be worth testing in people; it proves nothing about people on its own.

A compound can act differently in a person than in an animal, and it can even do the opposite, or have a much larger or smaller effect.

How It Works

The mechanism described most often is angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels, which is part of how a tendon, ligament, or gut wall repairs. In cultured blood-vessel cells and in animals, BPC-157 promotes angiogenesis, an effect linked to activation of VEGFR2, the receptor for the main blood-vessel growth signal. That behavior appears in cultured cells; whether it heals tissue in a person is untested.

BPC-157 also interacts with the nitric oxide system, the signaling pathway that relaxes blood vessels and regulates blood flow. In human artery tissue in the lab, it made the vessel relax and widen, working through the cells that line the vessel wall. In cultured tendon cells it raised the expression of the growth hormone receptor and increased cell growth, one proposed route to faster tendon repair.

How To Think About It

How To Think About It

The healing people want from BPC-157 is best reached by the routes with human evidence behind them. The consistent tendon- and gut-healing signal in animals is a real reason the peptide is being watched. It is a legitimate target for the human trials that have not yet been run.

1
Load the injured tissue and give it timeFreeModerate

Tendons and muscle repair with graded loading and time. Human trials support progressive rehabilitation as the best-evidenced lever for tendon and muscle recovery.

2
Feed and rest the repairFreeEasy

Adequate protein supplies the building blocks for repair, and sleep is when much of that repair occurs. Both are supported by human evidence for recovery.

The Chinese Medicine View

No classical Chinese text describes BPC-157, a molecule synthesized in the last few decades. The tradition still offers a lens on the injury itself. Chinese medicine holds that the Spleen governs the muscles and flesh, the Liver governs the sinews, meaning the tendons and ligaments, and the Kidney governs the bones. It treats the repair of an injury as the work of Qi and Blood closing the wound. A slow-healing wound reads as a deficiency of Qi and Blood, or as stagnation blocking their flow.

The classical approach to a slow wound supports the person's own capacity to heal with herbs, food, and rest, and it does not add a single isolated agent. Here the tradition offers a caution. Building the body up helps someone who is genuinely depleted and can take in the support. Pushing a system that cannot use it only wears it down further.

Cautions

Everything to be aware of is here, in one place. This practice suits most healthy people; a few situations call for real care.

Seiwerth et al., Stable Gastric Pentadecapeptide BPC 157 and Wound Healing

Sold as an unregulated research chemical

BPC-157 reaches buyers as a research chemical, with no pharmaceutical oversight, so no authority verifies its identity, dose, purity, or sterility. Testing of gray-market peptides has found wrong doses, missing active ingredient, and contamination. The injectable form adds the risk of self-injecting a nonsterile product. In the United States the FDA has flagged BPC-157 as lacking the safety data needed for pharmacy compounding.

Human safety is unknown

The safety of BPC-157 in people, including its long-term safety, has not been established. No reports of harm are not the same as proof it is safe; that only means almost no one has been studied. Anyone considering it is acting on animal data and personal reports, without the human safety record an approved medicine has.

The angiogenesis and cancer question is open

The same growth of new blood vessels that could help a wound heal is also part of how tumors grow. No long human study has looked at whether promoting angiogenesis with this peptide affects cancer risk. This concern is unconfirmed, but it is a real reason for caution in anyone with a personal or family history of cancer.

Banned in competitive sport

BPC-157 is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which lists it among non-approved substances banned at all times. Any athlete subject to drug testing who uses it risks a sanction, and this holds whether it is taken by mouth or injected.

No data in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or children

BPC-157 has not been studied in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or children, so there is no basis for judging it safe in any of them. With no human data at all, avoiding it in these groups is the only defensible position.

A persistent injury needs a diagnosis

Persistent or severe pain, a tendon or muscle that is not recovering, or gut symptoms can signal a problem that needs a specific treatment. Self-treating with an experimental substance can delay that diagnosis. A clinician or physical therapist who can identify what is wrong is the step for a real injury.

Start slow, be smart, read the research, and consult a professional if you have any concerns. This is here to inform your choice, not make it for you.

Common Questions

Does BPC-157 actually heal tendons and injuries?

In rat studies, BPC-157 speeds tendon, ligament, and muscle repair and restores movement, and those results are consistent across many labs. In people, none of this has been shown. No trial in people has tested it for tendon, ligament, muscle, or joint injury, so the healing claims made for it online rest on animal data.

Is BPC-157 safe?

Its safety in people is unknown, because almost no one has been studied. Short-term and long-term effects in humans have not been measured. It is also sold as an unregulated research chemical, so its actual contents are often unverified. The new blood vessels it promotes raise an open question about cancer.

It is not approved as a medicine in any country. It is sold as a research chemical, marketed for laboratory use, which is how it reaches buyers without going through drug approval. In the United States the FDA has said BPC-157 lacks the safety data required for pharmacy compounding. It is also banned in competitive sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Is the oral or the injectable form better?

Neither has been shown to work in people, so there is no evidence-based answer. Animal studies have used both oral and injected routes. The injectable form is the one most marketed, and it adds the risks of injecting an unsterile, unverified product. Without a human trial, any choice between the two rests on animal data.
