Supplement: Polvos verdes

My Plan

Preliminary

What It Is

A greens powder is dried, powdered plant material sold by the tub: vegetables, grasses, fruit, algae such as spirulina and chlorella, plus probiotics, enzymes, adaptogens and added vitamins and minerals. AG1 and Green Vibrance are two of the best known, and the category runs from a handful of ingredients to lists of 70 or more. You stir one scoop into water once a day.

Several of these ingredients are old foods in a modern form. Spirulina was harvested and eaten by the Aztecs from Lake Texcoco. Chlorella was cultivated as a food crop in post-war Japan, and wheatgrass juice has been a health food since the mid-20th century. The powder concentrates foods people have eaten for a long time.

The pitch is coverage: one serving standing in for the vegetables missed on a busy day. The label is where you check it, because most of these products are sold as a proprietary blend of 20 or more ingredients.

Anatomy of the Practice

1What is in a scoop

The base is dried, milled plant matter: vegetables, leafy greens, cereal grasses like wheatgrass and barley grass, fruit, and often algae like spirulina and chlorella. On top of that many products add isolated vitamins and minerals, probiotic bacteria, digestive enzymes, and herbs marketed as adaptogens. Drying and milling concentrate the plant pigments and some vitamins. They strip most of the water and bulk fiber, so a few-gram scoop stands in for what was a plateful.

2The proprietary blend, where the dose is not shown

A Supplement Facts panel can group many ingredients into one proprietary blend and print a single combined weight for the whole group. So a blend might read as a few grams total across twenty superfoods, listed in order of amount. You cannot tell whether the spirulina near the top is a real dose or the reishi near the bottom is a pinch. Added vitamins and minerals must list their amounts, because they are regulated that way. The plant blend the marketing is built on does not.

3What your body does with it

The plant antioxidants, carotenoids and folate in the powder are absorbed, and trials measure them rising in the blood within weeks. A scoop does not rebuild the whole-food package: the intact fiber, the water, and the food matrix that make a vegetable fill you up and feed the gut slowly. Most of that is left behind in the drying. [Whole foods](/go/integrative/practice/whole-foods) is the plate that package comes from.

How It Works

A greens powder delivers concentrated plant compounds the gut absorbs. Dry the juice or pulp of vegetables and fruit, then mill it fine, and the powder carries four absorbed compounds: carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E and folate. That is why a daily scoop lifts their blood levels within a few weeks. For someone whose intake of these nutrients is low, that rise is the point of the product. The added synthetic vitamins and minerals do the job a multivitamin does, filling specific gaps at a set dose.

The powder does not reproduce a vegetable. Most of the fiber and nearly all the water are gone. The slow release and fullness go too, the qualities that let whole plants blunt the glucose rise after a meal. The micronutrients transfer; the fiber and food matrix that carry the long-run outcome evidence do not.

What It Does

A daily greens powder does one thing the trials show clearly: it raises blood levels of the plant nutrients it carries. In a four-week trial, a fruit-and-vegetable concentrate raised blood beta-carotene several-fold and folate by about 174%. It also lowered homocysteine by about a fifth and shifted some markers of oxidative stress, with no change in what people ate. A systematic review of 22 trials found the same pattern across commercial products: antioxidant vitamins and folate up, oxidative-stress markers down.

Those marker changes have not been shown to improve health.

A controlled trial gave people with metabolic syndrome the capsules for eight weeks and measured how their arteries opened, along with blood sugar and cholesterol. Nothing moved against placebo.

The marker rises are consistent and believable. The research behind them is thin. Most trials are short, measure blood chemistry instead of disease, and run on branded products, sometimes by researchers tied to the maker.

Ways to Do It

Reading the label sorts a product that does something from a long ingredient list. It also sorts the person with a real vegetable gap from the person who already eats plants most days.

1
Eat the vegetables first if you canFree to $Moderate

Whole vegetables are the highest-value move here. If time or habit is the barrier, add a few servings of actual vegetables and fruit. A greens powder tops that up.

2
Read past the proprietary blendFreeEasy

Look for a Supplement Facts panel that lists amounts per ingredient. If twenty items share one combined number, no single dose is knowable. A panel with per-ingredient amounts shows what you are getting; a proprietary blend does not.

3
Look for third-party testingFree to checkEasy

A seal from an independent tester such as NSF or Informed Sport means someone outside the company checked what is in the tub and screened for heavy metals and contaminants. This matters most for algae ingredients like spirulina and chlorella. They take up contaminants from the water they grow in. No independent seal is a reason for caution.

4
Match the product to an actual gap$ to $$$Easy

A greens powder does the most for someone who eats few vegetables, travels constantly, or has a diet limited by illness or appetite. There it works like a multivitamin with some extra plant compounds. If you already eat vegetables most days, the plant nutrients in a scoop are largely ones your diet already supplies.

5
Check what it adds to the rest of your dayFreeEasy

Total up the vitamins and minerals across everything you take. A greens powder often carries a full multivitamin dose plus iron, vitamin A, vitamin K and iodine from kelp. Stacked on a daily multivitamin, those amounts can climb higher than you intend. If you are on a blood thinner, keep your vitamin K intake steady.

Heart And Vascular

In plain terms

In detail

How it works

In plain terms

In detail

In plain terms

In detail

Go Deeper

  • Whole foods: the bulk, fullness and slow release a powder leaves out, and why they are much of what makes vegetables work.
  • Vitamin C: a single added nutrient many greens powders lean on, where the deficiency use is certain and the megadose reputation runs ahead of the evidence, a useful model for reading any supplement claim.
  • Insulin and glucose: the blood-sugar machinery that fiber and the whole-food matrix act on, largely absent from a dried powder.
  • Buying organic: where paying more for food does and does not buy a measurable difference, the same question a premium greens powder raises.
  • Multivitamin: the product a greens powder most resembles once you look past the plant list, where a broad daily dose helps a few groups and does little for most.

The Chinese Medicine View

Chinese medicine puts digestion at the center of how food becomes vitality. The Stomach receives and ripens what you eat. The Spleen then transforms it, lifting the clear part upward to be made into Qi and Blood and sending the turbid part down. Food nourishes to the degree the Spleen can transform it, a different question from what a laboratory assay of a powder measures.

The tradition leans toward fresh, living food, what the classical texts frame as clear and simple eating that supports the Spleen without taxing it. A vegetable eaten close to its whole form counts as living food in this sense. A dried, concentrated extract sits a step removed, and the framework would not call the two equivalent even where an assay shows the same carotenoid content.

The tradition is also wary of forcing a single concentrated substance past what digestion can transform. That lines up with the modern caution that stacking high doses is not automatically better. A practitioner would fit the advice to the person. Someone with a weak Spleen, read in bloating, loose stools and fatigue after meals, is usually steered toward warm, cooked food. A scoop of cold powder in water can sit poorly with that constitution.

Cautions For This Practice

Extra restraint

Everything to be aware of is here, in one place. This practice suits most healthy people; a few situations call for real care.

Sochacka et al., spirulina and chlorella dietary supplements, are they a source solely of valuable nutrients?

Roy-Lachapelle et al., detection of cyanotoxins in algae dietary supplements

Crawford et al., label accuracy and quality of select weight-loss dietary supplements sold on or near US military bases

Algae ingredients can carry contaminants

Spirulina and chlorella are grown in water and take up what is in it. In one analysis of 18 algae supplements, 8 carried cyanobacterial toxins and 4 of those exceeded tolerable daily limits. A separate survey of 52 spirulina and chlorella products found metals within legal limits, but a notable aluminum load and traces of pharmaceuticals, with organic products no cleaner than conventional. An independent testing seal is the practical safeguard, and the caution is higher in pregnancy.

Vitamin K and blood thinners

Powders built on kale, spinach and broccoli carry meaningful vitamin K. Warfarin is dosed against vitamin K intake. A systematic review found dietary vitamin K shifts anticoagulation mainly at higher intakes, so steadiness is the sensible course. If you take warfarin, a sudden change is the risk: starting or stopping a daily scoop can shift your INR. Keep intake steady and tell your prescriber you are adding it.

Watch the stacked totals

A full multivitamin dose is common in these powders, and it stacks on any multivitamin or supplements you already take. The fat-soluble vitamins, iron and iodine can then add up past what you intend. Kelp in particular can push iodine high enough to affect the thyroid. Total your intake across every supplement you take.

Start slow, be smart, read the research, and consult a professional if you have any concerns. This is here to inform your choice, not make it for you.

Common Questions

Are greens powders safe?

For most people, yes. Trials report no serious harms at normal use. The narrower risks are contaminants in an algae ingredient, and a vitamin K load if you take warfarin. An outside lab test covers the first; total your supplement intake for the second.
