The Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) is a 0–100 score. It measures how often you are in the same state, asleep or awake, at the same clock time from one day to the next. A score of 100 means identical days; a low score means scattered ones.

What It Does

Nearly 61,000 UK Biobank adults wore wrist trackers for a week (Windred 2024). The most regular sleepers were 20 to 48% less likely to die over the next six years than the most erratic, a range that spans all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Their sleep timing predicted that risk better than the number of hours they slept. Across separate cohorts, the same steadiness tracks with:

Both restricted groups increased after-dinner energy intake and gained body weight versus baseline. Weekend recovery brought about 1.1 hours more sleep and briefly reduced after-dinner intake, but the gains rebounded once short sleep resumed. Whole-body insulin sensitivity fell about 13% in the no-recovery group, and in the weekend-recovery group whole-body, liver and muscle insulin sensitivity fell about 9 to 27% during the recurrent insufficient sleep after the weekend, versus baseline. A controlled experiment, so free of the confounding in the observational studies, but small and short.

How It Works

The Chinese Medicine View

Chinese medicine placed a regular daily rhythm at the center of health long before anyone measured a body clock. Chapter 1 of the Su Wen describes how the ancients stayed well into old age. It gives a short list: 食飲有節,起居有常,不妄作勞:

Sleeping, waking, eating, and working each have an hour when the body is best set up for them.

The seasonal chapters advise later rising in winter and earlier rising in summer, moving the schedule with the light through the year. All of it sits inside 養生 (Yang Sheng), the practice of nourishing life, whose logic is to live in step with the rhythms of the day and the seasons. It is an old, widely followed instruction that happens to agree with the modern data. No. You can sleep seven hours a night and still run a wildly moving schedule. One night you fall asleep at 10:00 and the next at 2:00; you wake at 6:00 on workdays but 11:00 on weekends. Regularity is the piece of sleep most people never think to hold steady.

How much can my schedule drift before it matters?

A cardiovascular study drew the clearest line: risk rose sharply once night-to-night variability passed about two hours (Huang 2020). The steadiest group varied by under an hour, weekends included.

Does a steady schedule actually make you live longer?

Not proven. Erratic sleepers often differ from steady ones in health, work, and circumstance, so a hidden third variable could drive both the scattered sleep and the risk. Early illness can itself scatter sleep. A large real-world association plus a confirmed mechanism is reason enough to act now. But even the lab experiments that confirm the mechanism cannot substitute for a trial: none has assigned people a schedule and counted the years they gain.
