Supplement: L-théanine

My Plan

Findings & Outcomes

Preliminary

What It Is

L-theanine occurs in the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, and almost nowhere else in the diet. It makes up a large share of the free amino acids in the leaf and gives brewed tea much of its smooth, savory taste. A cup of tea delivers it alongside caffeine in one serving. That caffeine pairing is where l-theanine's clearest findings come from. Sold as capsules, it is a calm-and-focus aid at 100 to 200 mg, cheap and well tolerated. Its effects depend on the dose size, and on whether you take it with caffeine or by itself.

What It Does

L-theanine's measured effects are small, mostly short-lived, and largest when it is taken with caffeine:

  • Calm, focused attention is the effect with the most trial evidence behind it, clearest for the caffeine pairing and smaller when theanine is taken alone.
  • A single-dose anti-stress effect comes next. An hour before a demanding task, it lowers how stressed you feel and your cortisol response, and softens the blood-pressure spike in those who react most.
  • Ongoing anxiety, mood and sleep are weaker and more mixed; reviews read cautiously positive, but one 28-day trial found no gap between it and placebo.
  • At rest, nothing changes, no measurable shift in blood pressure, heart rate, or heart-rate variability.
  • Safety is good, no worse for side effects than placebo through 28 days of daily use.

The most-cited acute-stress trial carries a caveat. The drink it tested, NeuroBliss, also held phosphatidylserine, alpha-GPC and chamomile, so its result cannot be pinned on l-theanine alone.

The Research & Studies

Everything here is based on the research we have collected and checked, sorted into groups and ordered with the strongest evidence first. Click any claim to open the studies behind it.

Cognition

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Pooled across randomized trials in healthy adults of both sexes, so the finding applies broadly to healthy adults.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Measured in middle-aged and older adults aged 50 to 69; whether the same acute effect holds in younger adults is not established here.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Reviewed across studies in healthy adults of both sexes.

How to use it

How it works

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Measured in healthy young adults; the alpha-activity response is a general brain effect but was not broken out by sex or tested across ages here.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Measured in 11 healthy young men. A null result in a small male sample does not establish the same absence of effect in women or other ages; it is simply untested there.

How to use it

Anxiety And Stress

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Measured in healthy adults aged 18 to 40 without sex reported; not tested in older adults here.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Reviewed and tested in adults of both sexes under stress, so it applies to generally healthy stressed adults.

How to use it

Heart And Vascular

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:A very small crossover that did not report sex, so the finding is not broken out by sex and holds mainly for people whose blood pressure spikes most under stress.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Measured in a mostly female sample (21 women, 9 men, mean age about 48); the direction should hold across sexes, though the sample skews female.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Measured only in boys aged 8 to 12 with ADHD. Whether l-theanine improves sleep in girls, in adults, or in people without ADHD is untested here, so this finding does not carry across to those groups on its own.

How to use it

How It Works

L-theanine shifts the brain toward calm while arousal stays intact, and it pairs with caffeine because the two act on separate systems.

Anatomy of the Practice

1Crosses into the brain

L-theanine is absorbed quickly from the gut and, being close in structure to glutamate, is carried across the blood-brain barrier. Blood levels peak within about an hour of a dose. The studied effects are therefore short-lived. Trials measure them over the hours after a dose.

2Raises GABA, eases glutamate

In the brain it slightly raises GABA and other calming signals, and dampens the excitatory glutamate side. Tipping that balance is what shifts the nervous system toward calm. On an EEG this raises alpha activity, the band seen in a relaxed but alert person. It appears even at a tea-sized 50 mg dose.

3Pairs with caffeine

Taken with caffeine, the two act on different systems at once: caffeine blocks the adenosine that signals tiredness and sharpens arousal, while l-theanine reduces the overstimulation. The pairing is where the clearest attention findings come from, and it is already present in a cup of tea.

The trials are mostly small and short (a few dozen people, measured over hours or a few weeks) so nothing longer than a 28-day study anchors a finding. The other limit is who paid for them.

Nearly every l-theanine trial was funded by a company with tea or supplements to sell. The funders include Unilever's Lipton division, the Japanese tea company ITO EN, and Taiyo Kagaku, maker of the Suntheanine brand used in the sleep trial. KGK Science tested the AlphaWave brand in the 28-day stress trial.

Commercial funding does not make a result wrong. But companies with a product to sell have a stake in a positive result, and few independent groups have repeated the work. Every finding here is still early-stage and unconfirmed.

Getting the Dose Right

A measured capsule is the on-purpose way to dose it, a fixed 200 mg amount, or paired with coffee.

Ways to Do It

Start with tea. A measured dose paired with caffeine is where the clearest findings come from.

1
Drink teaFreeEasy

A cup of green, black or white tea delivers l-theanine and caffeine together, in whatever ratio the leaf naturally contains. A typical cup gives roughly 20 to 50 mg of theanine, with matcha and strong green teas at the higher end. This is the food-first route, and for the calm-attention effect, the research points to exactly this tea-and-caffeine combination.

2
Pair it with caffeine on purpose$Easy

The clearest cognitive findings come from l-theanine taken with caffeine, so take them together if you want the effect on demand. Trials commonly use about 100 mg of caffeine with 200 mg of theanine. That is roughly two cups of tea plus a small supplement. Adding theanine to coffee keeps the caffeine effect while reducing the jitteriness.

3
Take a studied dose for stress$Easy

The stress and anxiety trials used 200 mg a day, and the systematic reviews land on a 200 to 400 mg daily range for people under ongoing stress. A single 200 mg dose is the sensible starting point, taken when you want it or once daily. You do not need to build up to it over days; the effect comes on within the hour.

4
A generic third-party-tested l-theanine capsule$Easy

A plain l-theanine capsule of 100 to 200 mg costs a few cents per serving. An independent testing mark, such as NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport, tells you the capsule holds pure l-theanine at the labeled dose, free of contaminants. Look for pure l-theanine on the label.

Go Deeper

  • Caffeine: the stimulant half of the caffeine pairing, plus the timing rules for what it costs your sleep.
  • Breathwork and HRV: a free, on-demand way to steady the same stress response, with a physiology you can measure.
  • Sleep restriction and stimulus control: if poor sleep is why you reach for calm, this is the best-evidenced way to fix it at the root.

The Chinese Medicine View

L-theanine was isolated from tea in the twentieth century, so the amino acid has no entry in the classical Chinese pharmacopoeia. Tea does. Camellia sinensis, the plant it comes from, is a materia medica substance in its own right. This is a way of reading a modern compound against a plant, and it carries no evidential weight.

Tea is classed as cool in nature, bitter and sweet in flavor, entering the Heart, Lung and Stomach channels. Its recognized actions read close to what a modern user wants from theanine and caffeine together:

  • clears heat
  • clears the head and the eyes
  • lifts and settles the mind, so thinking stays sharp without agitation
  • quenches thirst
  • moves the bowels and urine
  • helps resolve food stagnation

The clearing-the-head action means calm, unclouded alertness, the closest match to l-theanine's measured alpha-wave effect.

The cool, clearing nature of tea does not suit everyone. The tradition tells anyone who runs cold, or whose digestion is weak, to go easy on a cool, downward-moving substance.

Cautions For This Practice

Everything to be aware of is here, in one place. This practice suits most healthy people; a few situations call for real care.

Moulin et al., safety and efficacy of AlphaWave L-theanine supplementation for 28 days in healthy adults with moderate stress: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

If you take blood pressure medication

L-theanine can blunt the rise in blood pressure that a stressful task provokes, and lower it a little at rest in some people. On its own this is mild. If you already take medication that lowers blood pressure, mention l-theanine to whoever manages that medication so the combined effect is watched.

For children, involve a clinician

The only trial of l-theanine in children was for sleep in boys with ADHD, run under clinical supervision at a set dose. Giving a supplement to a child is a different decision from taking one yourself, so raise it with the doctor who cares for the child first.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not studied

No trials have tested supplemental l-theanine in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so its safety at supplement doses then is unknown. The theanine in ordinary tea is a much smaller amount, and there the usual advice concerns the caffeine in tea. For a concentrated supplement while pregnant or nursing, check first.

For an anxiety disorder, see a clinician

The effect measured here is a mild steadying, useful for everyday stress and calm attention. Significant or persistent anxiety, panic, or a mood disorder is something a clinician should assess and treat, and l-theanine is not a substitute for that care. Use it for what it does, and get the larger problem looked at.

Third-party testing is the mark to check

Supplements are loosely regulated, and what is in the capsule is not always what is on the label. An l-theanine that carries an independent testing mark confirms the product matches its label and is free of contaminants.

Start slow, be smart, read the research, and consult a professional if you have any concerns. This is here to inform your choice, not make it for you.

Common Questions

Does l-theanine make you sleepy?

No. It produces calm without sedation. On an EEG it lifts alpha activity, the 8–12 Hz rhythm of a mind at ease but wide awake. People describe it as steadying without dulling them. Paired with caffeine, it is used to stay sharp.

Should I take it with coffee or with tea?

Either works, and the caffeine pairing carries the best-supported attention effect. Tea already holds both in a single cup, the easiest route. If you drink coffee, adding a 200 mg capsule keeps the caffeine boost and lessens the jitters. Alone, theanine still shows a small effect, though the combination is better supported.

How much l-theanine should I take?

Stress trials settled on 200 mg daily; reviews widen the useful range to 200 to 400 mg for people under lasting stress. Begin with a single 200 mg dose. It comes on within about an hour, so you do not need to build up over days. A cup or two of tea gives a smaller amount in the most natural form.

Is l-theanine safe?

Very well tolerated. It is an amino acid people already get from tea, and trials up to 28 days report side effects no higher than placebo. The cautions are specific. Flag it if you take blood pressure medication, and involve a doctor before giving it to a child. Treat pregnancy and breastfeeding as untested for a concentrated supplement. Because the trials are small and short, rare or long-term effects are not ruled out.

Does l-theanine help with anxiety?

The evidence is emerging and points the right way for everyday stress. Within an hour, trials show a drop in how stressed you feel and in the body's reaction to a demanding task. A four-week study lowered depression and trait-anxiety scores against placebo. Over several weeks the picture is mixed. These are small, short studies with a mild effect. Significant or persistent anxiety needs a clinician's assessment; theanine does not replace it.

This page is educational and it is not medical advice. Last reviewed and updated August 9, 2026.
