Training: Les huit pièces de brocart (Ba Duan Jin)

My Plan

Findings & Outcomes

What It Is

Ba Duan Jin (八段錦, "eight pieces of brocade") is one standardized qi gong routine: eight named movements, each repeated several times, done slowly and coordinated with the breath. The name compares the eight movements to the eight panels of a piece of brocade. A beginner can learn the whole sequence in an afternoon and practice it in about 10 to 15 minutes. It is one short routine inside the larger tai chi and qi gong family; unlike tai chi's long forms, its eight movements are learned separately.

What the Research Shows

The Research & Studies

Everything here is based on the research we have collected and checked, sorted into groups and ordered with the strongest evidence first. Click any claim to open the studies behind it.

Mood & stress

Moderately better quality of life across 19 trialsEmerging
In plain terms

Across 19 trials, people who practiced Ba Duan Jin reported a moderately better quality of life than people who did not exercise. The studies are small and mostly Chinese-language, and the reviewers scored them fair-to-good, short of high quality.

In detail

The 2017 meta-analysis pooled 19 randomized controlled trials of Ba Duan Jin across six databases and found a standardized mean difference of -0.75 for quality of life (95% CI -1.26 to -0.24, p = 0.004), a moderate-to-large effect against non-exercising controls. The same review reported benefits for sleep, balance, grip strength, flexibility, blood pressure and resting heart rate. The review flagged a small number of eligible studies drawn largely from Chinese-language sources and scored the trials only fair-to-good on the PEDro scale, which is why this is graded emerging, not moderate: the direction is consistent but the evidence base is methodologically weak.

Who this may not transfer to:The review does not report a pooled sex split across its included trials, so the balance of men and women behind this estimate is not established.

How to use it

Treat this as a reason to expect that a practice you enjoy and keep up may lift how you feel week to week, not as a measured dose-response you can hold Ba Duan Jin to.

Lower depression, anxiety and stress across 35 student trials, fading once practice stopsEmerging
In plain terms

In university students, practicing Ba Duan Jin lowered depression and anxiety scores and eased stress compared with routine care. The benefit to stress and sleep faded after they stopped, and the studies were of only moderate quality.

In detail

This 2026 systematic review covered 36 trials (3,233 students), with 35 trials (2,846 students) pooled. Ba Duan Jin improved overall mental health (SCL-90), depressive symptoms (SDS, 95% CI -5.67 to -3.00), anxiety (SAS, 95% CI -6.30 to -1.73), negative mood (POMS), perceived stress (PSS/CPSS) and fatigue, all versus routine care. Subgroups suggested three sessions a week and 12 weeks or less worked best. Follow-up showed the stress and sleep gains were not sustained after practice ceased. Methodological quality was moderate, and the sample is young students against routine care, not an active comparator, so this is emerging and specific to that group.

Who this may not transfer to:University-student samples enrolled both sexes; whether these effects transfer to older adults or to people with diagnosed mood disorders is untested in this review, though its sex balance is not the limiting factor.

How to use it

For everyday low mood, stress and anxiety this is a reasonable, low-risk thing to try, kept up as an ongoing habit since the benefit faded when practice stopped. It is not a treatment for a diagnosed depressive or anxiety disorder, and it has not been tested as one.

Sleep

Moderately better self-rated sleep qualityEmerging
In plain terms

People who practiced Ba Duan Jin rated their sleep as moderately better than people who did not exercise. The measure was how they felt they slept, on a questionnaire, not anything recorded overnight.

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:No pooled sex split is reported for the sleep subset, so the sex basis of this estimate is not established.

How to use it

Muscle And Strength

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:No pooled sex split is reported for these subsets, so the sex basis is not established.

How to use it

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:Only 13 of the 90 participants were men, so this is in practice a finding about women; the effect in men rests on too few people to stand on its own.

How to use it

Balance And Falls

In plain terms

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:The trial enrolled 10 men and 10 women per arm, so the sexes were balanced, though each arm is only 20 people.

How to use it

Heart And Vascular

Pression artérielle systolique inférieure d'environ 8 à 11 mmHg sur 3 à 6 moisEmerging
In plain terms

L'effet était moindre à un an.

In detail

Who this may not transfer to:The pooled trials enrolled both sexes; a detailed sex split is not reported across the 24 studies.

How to use it

Blood Sugar

Better blood sugar in prediabetes, biggest gains from Ba Duan Jin and qigong (22 trials)Emerging
In plain terms

In people with prediabetes, Chinese mind-body exercises improved fasting blood sugar and long-term sugar control, and Ba Duan Jin, analyzed with the other exercises, ranked among the most effective for metabolic outcomes. The review's headline numbers pool the exercises together, so they are not specific to the Eight Brocades on its own.

In detail

This 2025 meta-analysis pooled 22 trials (1,854 adults with prediabetes) of traditional Chinese exercises and found significant improvements in fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, 2-hour postprandial glucose and insulin resistance against controls, with fasting glucose improving consistently at 3, 6 and 12 months. In subgroup analysis by exercise type (11 Ba Duan Jin trials, 8 qigong, 3 tai chi), Ba Duan Jin and qigong were the most effective for metabolic outcomes while tai chi was inconclusive. The review's pooled effect sizes combine all traditional Chinese exercises, not reporting a single Ba Duan Jin figure in its main analysis, and the authors flag high heterogeneity and small samples, so this is emerging.

Who this may not transfer to:Both sexes were enrolled across the pooled trials; a detailed split is not reported.

How to use it

If you have prediabetes, gentle regular movement of any kind helps, and Ba Duan Jin is a pleasant low-barrier option; pair it with the dietary and walking measures that carry the strongest glucose evidence, not relying on it alone.

Energy And Fatigue

Less self-reported fatigue in students, a standardized mean difference of 1.0 on the Fatigue Scale-14Emerging
In plain terms

Students who practiced Ba Duan Jin reported feeling less tired than those getting routine care. It is a modest, self-reported effect from moderate-quality studies.

In detail

Within the 2026 student meta-analysis, three trials (184 students) reported the Fatigue Scale-14, and Ba Duan Jin reduced it by a standardized mean difference of -1.0 (95% CI -1.55 to -0.46) against routine care; the review used a standardized, not raw difference here because the trials drew on inconsistent versions of the scale. The finding sits alongside the mood, stress and sleep results from the same review and shares their limits: young-student samples, routine-care comparators, moderate methodological quality, and self-report, not an objective fatigue measure. A gentle practice easing subjective tiredness is plausible, but the grade is held at emerging for the quality of the underlying trials and the small number reporting fatigue.

Who this may not transfer to:Enrolled both sexes; transfer to older or clinically fatigued populations is untested here, and the sex balance is not the limiting factor.

How to use it

For ordinary tiredness, a short unhurried session is a low-cost thing to try. If you are exhausted out of proportion to your activity, the tradition itself says to rest, not push through, and persistent unexplained fatigue is worth a medical look.

Cholesterol And Lipids

In plain terms

In detail

Within the 2025 hypertension meta-analysis, Ba Duan Jin improved triglycerides (SMD -0.34, 95% CI -0.49 to -0.19), total cholesterol (SMD -0.92, 95% CI -1.49 to -0.34, with high heterogeneity) and resting heart rate (SMD -1.07, 95% CI -1.76 to -0.38). Under GRADE the authors rated triglycerides low and total cholesterol very low, citing methodological limitations, so the metabolic effects are held here at preliminary even though the blood-pressure effects from the same review reach emerging. The authors themselves state that the lipid and heart-rate benefits need confirmation in higher-quality trials.

Who this may not transfer to:Both sexes were enrolled; a detailed split is not reported.

How to use it

Do not count on Ba Duan Jin to move your cholesterol; treat any lipid benefit as a possible bonus of a practice you keep up for other reasons, and manage lipids through the measures with real evidence behind them.

Respiratory

Ranked top for FEV1 lung function among Chinese exercises in stable COPDPreliminary
In plain terms

In people with stable COPD, Chinese breathing-and-movement exercises modestly improved lung function, and Ba Duan Jin ranked at or near the top for one common measure. A related practice, Liuzijue, ranked slightly better overall.

In detail

This 2024 network meta-analysis pooled 57 trials (4,294 patients with stable COPD) comparing Ba Duan Jin, Liuzijue, Wuqinxi and tai chi. Ba Duan Jin was most effective for FEV1, while Liuzijue led on FEV1 percent predicted and the FEV1/FVC ratio and ranked best overall. A separate 2026 review of these practices reported improved FEV1, FVC, 6-minute walk distance and quality of life with no serious adverse events. Ba Duan Jin is not isolated as the sole intervention in these analyzes, the between-practice gaps are small, and the trials are China-based and modest in size, so the grade is emerging.

Who this may not transfer to:COPD trials enrolled both sexes; a pooled split is not reported, and the condition skews toward older adults with a smoking history.

How to use it

As a gentle, breath-coordinated adjunct to standard pulmonary rehabilitation it is reasonable and safe; it is an addition to inhaler therapy and formal rehab, not a replacement for them. If breathing exercises are the goal, Liuzijue and formal rehab have at least as much support.

The study · 1

Network meta-analysis of traditional Chinese mind-body exercises on pulmonary function in patients with stable COPD · BMC Complement Med Ther 2024;24(1):304

Across a large number of randomized trials pooled in recent meta-analyses, the results point one way. The blood-pressure evidence is graded moderate under GRADE, the strongest result for any Ba Duan Jin benefit. For people who start with high blood pressure, systolic pressure dropped by roughly 8 to 11 mmHg across 3 to 6 months. So trust the blood-pressure figure and the plainly mechanical gains most, and the single largest effect sizes least.

The blood-pressure evidence is graded moderate under GRADE, the strongest result for any Ba Duan Jin benefit. For people who start with high blood pressure, systolic pressure dropped by roughly 8 to 11 mmHg across 3 to 6 months.

The next-strongest findings are softer. The mood and anxiety trials in university students carry moderate methodological quality. Then come the mechanically plain gains: better trunk flexibility, stronger grip and steadier standing, about what a slow set of stretches, twists and weight shifts would change. The metabolic results, cholesterol most of all, rest on the weakest, low-quality trials here. Trials published in Chinese report much larger effects than English-language ones, a publication-bias pattern clearest in the tai chi blood-pressure data.

How It Works

Ba Duan Jin is light exercise with 3 elements layered together. The slow stretches, easy twists and controlled weight shifts work range of motion, grip and standing balance without loading the joints hard. The breath is deliberately slow and tied to each movement. That shifts the body toward its calming parasympathetic branch, the likely route to the mood, stress and sleep effects. The practice is also regular, repeatable and free, so it is easy to keep doing. As general conditioning it stays light, a complement to harder work like resistance training.

What to Expect

Practiced most days, different benefits show up on different timelines, from the first two sessions out to several months.

Anatomy of the Practice

1The first sessions

You learn the eight shapes one at a time, moving slowly and letting the breath lead. The movements are simple and repeated, not choreographed into a long sequence, so most people follow the whole set within 1 or 2 sessions. Many feel looser and calmer by the end.

2Over the first weeks

Flexibility and grip ease first, standing feels a little steadier, and mood and sleep tend to lift. This is the span the trials most often measured, and where the more believable gains show up.

3Over months

Kept up, blood pressure eases somewhat in people who start high, balance improves, and the wellbeing gains last as long as you keep practicing. In several trials the mood and sleep gains faded once practice stopped.

How to Start

The protocol follows 3 rules from the mechanism: move slowly, let the breath lead, and practice often enough to make it stick.

Ways to Do It

You can begin this week for free. Start at the first rung and add the others as they suit you. If you are older, unsteady, or working around a joint problem, begin seated or near support and build slowly.

1
Follow a free video at homeFreeEasy

Full-length Ba Duan Jin videos are free on the open web. Because the set is short and fixed, a single video can teach you the entire routine. Repeat each movement six to eight times. Aim for most days of the week; several trials used three sessions a week and found that enough.

2
Use the seated or chair versionFreeEasy

A chair version of Ba Duan Jin is well established and studied, and it keeps most of the arm, trunk and breathing work of the standing set. It suits anyone whose balance, joints or stamina make standing practice a strain. Seated practice trains the upper body, breath and attention, but not standing balance. If steadier feet are your goal, work toward the standing set as you can.

3
A community or online classFree to $$Moderate

Senior centers, hospital wellness programs, libraries and parks often run qi gong classes at little or no cost, and many teachers offer Ba Duan Jin online. A live teacher gives you what a video cannot: someone to correct a stance or a knee angle so you do not strain a joint. Look for a teacher who explains what each movement is for and offers a seated option to whoever needs it.

The Eight Movements

The eight movements run in a fixed order, each aimed at a different part of the body.

  1. Two Hands Hold Up the Heavens, the arms rise overhead in a full stretch; traditionally said to regulate the Triple Burner and open the whole torso.
  2. Drawing the Bow to Shoot the Hawk, a wide horse stance, the arms drawing an imaginary bow to left and right; opening the chest and Lungs.
  3. Separating Heaven and Earth, one arm presses up while the other presses down, then switch; traditionally to harmonize the Spleen and Stomach.
  4. Wise Owl Gazes Backward, the head and gaze turn back over each shoulder; said to relieve the five strains and seven injuries of overwork.
  5. Sway the Head and Swing the Tail, the trunk circles slowly from a low stance; traditionally to clear excess Heart fire.
  6. Two Hands Hold the Feet, a forward fold reaching toward the feet; said to strengthen the Kidneys and the lower back along the Bladder channel.
  7. Clench Fists and Glare: firm punches from a horse stance with a fierce gaze; to build strength and Qi, associated with the Liver.
  8. Bouncing on the Toes: rising onto the toes and dropping the heels with a gentle jolt; traditionally said to shake off a hundred ailments.

The Chinese Medicine View

Ba Duan Jin belongs to 導引 (daoyin), "guiding and pulling," the ancestor of all these practices. It is generally traced to the Song dynasty, close to 1,000 years ago, and the standing form was later systematized into the eight movements practiced today.

Like all daoyin, it works on three things at once: 調身, 調息, 調心, or body, breath and mind. Posture opens the pathways, Qi follows the slow breath, and attention guides both. Each of the 8 movements aims at a particular organ system or function, which is why the set is taught as a whole-body practice. The breath sinks toward the lower Dan Tian (丹田, "cinnabar field") in the lower abdomen: 氣沉丹田. This whole frame belongs to Yang Sheng, nourishing life, the preventive half of Chinese medicine.

The trials measured blood pressure, questionnaire scores and body sway; the tradition speaks of Qi, organs and channels in its own vocabulary. A practice that survived that long carries weight a short trial cannot measure. Traditional guidance also turns on your pattern in at least 3 ways, so it pays to ask a practitioner. Someone depleted is told to rest and do less. Practice traditionally comes before eating. Someone who runs cold is kept warm and out of the wind.

Go Deeper

Related pages cover the wider context. See tai chi and qi gong for the whole family, and walking or resistance training to train harder. For the breathing side see breath and HRV; for steadiness on your feet, balance and falls.

Cautions

Ba Duan Jin is low-impact, and 3 areas still deserve care.

Cautions For This Practice

Everything to be aware of is here, in one place. This practice suits most healthy people; a few situations call for real care.

No serious adverse events reported in the trials

Systematic review and meta-analysis of traditional Chinese mind-body exercises for COPD rehabilitation, reporting no serious adverse events

Start slowly and stay within an easy range

Ba Duan Jin is low-impact and low-intensity. The trials report no serious adverse events, as expected from slow stretches and holds. Keep the breath easy, never forcing or holding it; move within a comfortable range; and let any movement that pulls at a joint be smaller. If a movement reliably produces chest tightness, headache, palpitations or lightheadedness, ease off and, if it repeats, speak to a teacher or a clinician before continuing.

Care with knees, back and balance

The horse stances and the forward fold are where even this slow set can strain you. In the horse stances, keep the knees behind the toes and raise the stance if they hurt. In the forward fold, bend from the hips with a soft back; do not force the reach. If standing unsupported is a fall risk, stay within reach of a rail or chair, or use the seated version.

Alongside your usual care

For blood pressure, blood sugar, COPD or a mood or sleep problem, Ba Duan Jin is a reasonable addition to your usual care. Pair it with the stronger-evidenced measures for each. It is not a substitute for prescribed medication, for formal rehabilitation, or for treatment of a diagnosed condition, and it has not been tested as one. Keep monitoring your own numbers. If you have uncontrolled heart disease, severe osteoporosis, a recent injury or surgery, or symptoms that come on with exertion, get cleared before starting, as with any exercise.

Start slow, be smart, read the research, and consult a professional if you have any concerns. This is here to inform your choice, not make it for you.

Common Questions

Does Ba Duan Jin actually work, or is the research just weak?

Both are true at once. The blood-pressure result is solid; the cholesterol result is weak. The benefits are modest but believable, and the practice is low-risk.

How is it different from tai chi?

Tai chi is a martial art built around a long memorized form, sometimes up to 108 movements. Its strongest evidence is for balance and fall prevention in older adults. Ba Duan Jin is 1 short, fixed qi gong set of eight movements. The two are studied separately, and the deeper falls-prevention record belongs to tai chi and the wider family, not to the Eight Brocades alone.

How long before I judge whether it's working?

Give it about 12 weeks before you decide. Judge it with something concrete, a run of blood-pressure readings or a simple sleep or mood diary, not a general impression.

Can I do it if I cannot stand for long, or have bad knees?

Yes, and there are 2 ways in. Begin seated when standing is a strain or a fall risk. Or begin standing within reach of a counter or sturdy chair when only your balance is in doubt.

Is it enough exercise on its own?

For mobility, everyday steadiness and a calmer, better-slept baseline, it earns its place, and for someone doing little it is a real step up. As conditioning, though, it is light. It does not replace the 2 harder kinds of training: aerobic work for the heart and lungs, and resistance training for muscle and bone. Those carry stronger, less biased evidence, so keep Ba Duan Jin for mobility, breath and wellbeing, and pair it with something more demanding for strength and stamina.
