What It Is
Taurine is an amino acid the body makes for itself and also takes in from food. It gathers in the four tissues with the highest energy demand: the heart, the skeletal muscles, the brain, and the retina. Unlike most amino acids, it is not built into proteins but stays free inside the cell. The body makes its own supply from cysteine and methionine and draws the rest from seafood and dark poultry, so a real shortage is uncommon on a mixed diet. Most people first meet the word on an energy-drink label, where a can holds 1 to 2 grams. What the drink makes you feel comes mostly from the caffeine and sugar beside it. The research doses, a few grams of taurine on its own, run well above what a can delivers.
How It Works
Taurine works through four small, physical mechanisms inside the cell. It keeps a cell from swelling or shrinking as salt moves across the membrane. It lowers the excitability of nerve and heart cells by shifting how calcium and chloride cross that membrane. It supports the mitochondria as they turn fuel into energy. And it forms part of the bile acids that break down fat from a meal. None of the four is a change you can feel on its own.

Inside the cell, taurine sits as a large free pool, fed by diet and the body's own synthesis and drawn on continuously.

Over weeks, taking a few grams a day raises taurine in blood and tissue beyond what diet and synthesis provide. In trials, the measured changes trace back to that added taurine.
3Across the lifespan
Across a lifetime is the scale the mouse study reached for, and where taurine's reputation as a longevity supplement comes from. The animal evidence there runs well ahead of the human evidence.
What Changed
In June 2023, a study in Science gave middle-aged mice daily taurine and watched them live about a tenth longer. The same mice held more strength and denser bone into old age. Mice are a species where many interventions stretch lifespan, then fail to repeat in people. A separate arm followed monkeys on taurine over a shorter window, tracking healthspan markers without measuring how long they lived.
The human half of the same paper is observational. People with lower blood taurine carried more markers of poor cardiometabolic health. A link like that can point either way, since illness and aging can themselves lower taurine. The authors said so plainly and called for human trials. Even the premise that taurine drops with age in people is shaky: a later analysis did not find the decline.
The lifespan result is in mice. No randomized trial has tested taurine against human aging.
The evidence that has actually been tested in people is narrower and more specific. Pooled across seven trials in 103 people, a few grams a day lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure by about 3 mmHg, with no adverse events reported. That drop landed mainly in people whose pressure was high to start with.
Among people with diabetes, the signal points the same way. A meta-analysis of five randomized trials in 209 people found taurine lowered HbA1c, fasting blood sugar, and a measure of insulin resistance. Its effect on their blood lipids and blood pressure did not reach significance.
The exercise evidence is thinner still. One meta-analysis of endurance trials found taurine gave a minor, uneven edge in performance.

Taurine lowered blood pressure about 3 mmHg systolic and diastolic across seven small trials
Taking a few grams of taurine a day lowered blood pressure by roughly 3 points on both the upper and lower numbers, on average, with no side effects reported. The effect was most visible in people whose pressure was already high.
A meta-analysis (Waldron et al. 2018, Curr Hypertens Rep) pooled seven trials with 103 participants of varying age and health status. Oral taurine reduced systolic blood pressure (Hedges' g -0.70) and diastolic blood pressure (g -0.62), translating to mean reductions of about 3 mmHg in each (SBP range 0 to 15 mmHg, DBP range 0 to 7 mmHg), across doses of 1 to 6 g/day and periods from a single day to 12 weeks, with no adverse events reported.

In a small trial of people with heart failure, taurine improved how far and how well they could exercise compared with a placebo.
A randomized controlled trial (Beyranvand et al. 2011, J Cardiol) in patients with heart failure found that taurine supplementation improved exercise capacity, including walking distance, versus placebo. The trial was small, which limits how far the result can be generalized.

A small, inconsistent boost to endurance performance from oral taurine
Taking taurine before endurance exercise gave a small, not very consistent boost to performance. The edge is minor and should not be expected to do much on its own.
A meta-analysis (Waldron et al. 2018, Sports Med) of ten trials of isolated oral taurine found a small beneficial effect on endurance performance (Hedges' g = 0.40), across doses of 1 to 6 g, with no difference between single-dose and multi-day use. Effects were modest and variable across studies, and participants were predominantly male.
Who this may not transfer to:Endurance-ergogenic trials of taurine were predominantly in men; whether the small effect holds in women is not established, though the underlying physiology is not obviously sex-specific.

Blood Sugar
In people with diabetes, taurine lowered HbA1c, fasting blood sugar and insulin resistance across five trials
In people with diabetes, taurine modestly improved long-term blood-sugar control, fasting blood sugar and insulin resistance. Its effect on blood fats and blood pressure in this group was not clear-cut.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials in 209 participants (Tao et al. 2022, Food Chem Mol Sci) found taurine supplementation significantly lowered HbA1c, fasting blood sugar and HOMA-IR versus control, while reductions in insulin and triglycerides did not reach significance and there was no significant effect on serum lipids, blood pressure or body composition in diabetic patients.

Pooling 25 randomized trials, taurine nudged the cluster of metabolic-syndrome numbers in a favorable direction: blood pressure, fasting glucose and triglycerides all fell modestly, while HDL cholesterol did not change.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials in 1024 participants (Tzang et al. 2024, Nutr Diabetes) found taurine at 0.5 to 6 g/day significantly reduced systolic blood pressure (WMD -4.0 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (WMD -1.5 mmHg), fasting blood glucose (WMD -5.9 mg/dL) and triglycerides (WMD -18.3 mg/dL), with no significant change in HDL cholesterol; meta-regression showed dose-dependent falls in diastolic pressure and fasting glucose.

Longevity And Mortality
Daily taurine raised median lifespan about 10 to 12% in middle-aged mice
Giving middle-aged mice taurine every day helped them live about a tenth longer and stay stronger and healthier as they aged. This is an animal result and has not been shown in people.
In the 2023 Science report (Singh et al.), taurine supplementation begun at 14 months of age increased median lifespan by about 10 to 12% in mice and improved healthspan measures such as muscle strength, bone density, coordination and markers of DNA damage and cellular senescence. A parallel arm in middle-aged rhesus monkeys examined healthspan markers over a shorter period, not lifespan. Blood taurine was also shown to decline with age across mice, monkeys and humans.

How much taurine to take, if any, depends on your goal and on where your numbers start. The endurance trials enrolled mostly men, so that small performance edge may transfer less certainly to women. The safe level that supplement labels lean on, 3 grams a day, comes from a single risk assessment. Its authors work at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement-industry group, so read that figure with the conflict in mind. Human studies have gone as high as 6 grams a day without reporting harm.
Ways to Do It
For most healthy people on a mixed diet, food and the body's own synthesis already cover taurine. The rungs below are for specific goals, and the higher doses are a decision to make with a doctor.
Shellfish, fish, and dark poultry carry the most taurine, and your body makes more from cysteine and methionine, so an omnivore eating normally is rarely short. For a healthy person this is the baseline: whole food keeps the taurine-using tissues stocked. The trial evidence for supplementing is tied to specific targets like blood pressure or blood sugar.
Plain taurine powder is cheap. The doses used in the blood-pressure and blood-sugar trials run from about 1 to 6 grams a day, most often 1.5 to 3 grams, stirred into water. If your aim is blood pressure or glycemic control, this is the studied range, and it is a decision to make with your doctor.
The exercise trials used single doses of roughly 1 to 6 grams taken one to three hours before endurance activity, or short daily courses. The measured edge is small and inconsistent across trials.
Taurine is found almost only in animal foods, so people eating plant-based diets take in far less and tend to have lower blood and tissue levels. Whether that matters for health is not settled. If you want to match a typical omnivore intake, a small daily dose of around 0.5 to 1 gram is a reasonable, inexpensive way to close the gap.
Taurine is one well-defined molecule, so a specialty or advanced form is the same compound as plain powder. An independent testing mark, such as NSF or Informed Choice, confirms the container holds what the label claims.
The Chinese Medicine View
Taurine was first pulled from ox bile in the 1800s, which is where its name comes from, so it never entered the classical Chinese pharmacopoeia. No historical text gives it a channel, a temperature, or a flavor, and assigning one now would be an invention.
The tradition does classify the foods taurine comes from. Shellfish and fish sit among the foods read as nourishing to Blood and to the Kidney essence, the deep reserve tied to constitution and aging. Seafood is generally classed as enriching and moistening, and it falls under the salty flavor, linked with softening and downward movement.
The tradition never studied taurine, so any resemblance to the modern findings is coincidence. One habit of thought still carries across. Moistening seafood is treated as medicine for the dry and depleted, and as a burden for the damp or phlegm-laden. So the tradition would not give everyone the same dose; it matches the food to the person.

The longevity case for taurine rests on mice. Using it to slow your own aging is an experiment on yourself. The habits with the strongest human evidence for aging well are free ones, regular exercise and enough sleep, so start there.
If you have kidney disease, check with your doctor first
Taurine is cleared by the kidneys, and the trials showing it is well tolerated ran mostly in people with normal kidney function. If your kidney function is reduced, you are on dialysis, or you take medication that affects the kidneys, raise it with your doctor before starting.
It can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, a concern if you are medicated
This overlaps with the drugs used for high blood pressure and diabetes, so the two can stack. If you take either, tell your prescribing doctor and keep an eye on your numbers.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
Taurine is essential in infancy, and infant formula includes it for that reason. But doses above what food provides have not been well studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Until they are, food-level intake is the sensible ceiling, and a supplement is a conversation to have with a clinician.
Buy a third-party-tested product and keep the dose in the studied range
Supplements are loosely regulated, so choose a taurine with an independent testing mark, as in the buying step above. Keep the dose within the range those trials used; nothing found so far supports going higher.

How does taurine compare with better-studied supplements?
Taurine's human record is short and narrow. Two supplements with far more human trials behind them are creatine, for strength and muscle, and omega-3 and fish oil, for the heart and triglycerides.
