Science: Résonance et entraînement

My Plan

What Resonance Means In The Body

An oscillator is anything that cycles at a preferred rate. Push it in time with that rate and the swings grow; push it off the beat and they stay small or die out. That is resonance, ordinary physics. The body is full of oscillators, fast and slow:

  • the brain's electrical rhythms, in tens of cycles a second;
  • the roughly ten-second loop that regulates blood pressure;
  • the near-24-hour clock that governs sleep and hormones.

Entrainment is what happens when an outside rhythm couples to one of these and pulls it into step. It is a measurable relationship between two frequencies. Where the coupling holds, it can be put to use.

The Heart And Breath

This is the best-evidenced case. Blood pressure is held steady by the baroreflex, a feedback loop: sensors in the neck and chest register a rise in pressure, the brainstem slows the heart, pressure falls, then the heart speeds back up. The loop has a delay of about five seconds. That delay sets it oscillating with a period near ten seconds, a natural frequency close to 0.1 Hz, or six cycles a minute. Breathe at that rate and the breath and the baroreflex push together, so the heart rate swings wide and smooth, rising on the in-breath and falling on the out-breath. This resonance frequency differs from person to person: a bit lower in taller people, and lower in men than in women.

Slow breathing near six breaths a minute is how you find and drive that resonance. In people with high blood pressure it raised baroreflex sensitivity and lowered systolic pressure by about 8.6 mmHg on the spot. Trained as a practice, usually with biofeedback that displays the heart-rate swings, it lowered stress and anxiety. The pooled effect is a Hedges g of 0.83 across 24 studies, a large effect on that scale. How to run it, and what a heart rate variability reading does and does not mean, sits on the breathwork and HRV page.

The Circadian Clock

The second clean case is the daily clock. A cluster of cells above the crossing of the optic nerves, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, keeps a rhythm that runs a touch longer than 24 hours, about 24.18 hours on average. Because it is not exactly 24, it has to be reset every day. The signal that resets it is light, the zeitgeber, or time-giver.

Whether light advances or delays the clock depends on when it hits. Light in the morning, once core temperature has bottomed out overnight, advances the clock. Light late in the evening delays it. Measured under controlled conditions, a single well-timed bright-light exposure shifted the clock by up to five hours. That mechanism sits underneath a daily habit: morning light holds the day on schedule, and late-night light works against it. The clock's own biology is laid out on the circadian entrainment page, and the sleep payoff runs through insomnia.

Rhythms In The Brain

Neurons in the cortex get more and less excitable in a steady rhythm. When a rhythmic stimulus repeats steadily, whole populations shift into step with it, so inputs that arrive on the beat are processed more strongly. In primate cortex, this neural entrainment was shown to act as a mechanism of attention. It shows up in human EEG recordings too. That the brain can lock to a rhythm is established.

Two lines are early and moving:

  • 40 Hz sensory stimulation: flickering light and clicking sound tuned to the gamma band. In mice, 40 Hz stimulation reduced amyloid and shifted microglial activity, the brain's immune cells. In people with mild Alzheimer's disease, a pilot showed that daily 40 Hz light and sound is feasible and safe over months. It was built to test whether the exposure is feasible and safe; whether it slows the disease is what the larger controlled trials now running will show.
  • Sound timed to deep sleep. During slow-wave sleep the cortex runs a slow oscillation below one cycle a second. A soft click played in phase with the rising part of that wave strengthened the slow wave and the sleep spindles nested in it, and improved next-day recall. Clicks played off the beat did nothing. That was the control: it showed the timing, not the sound itself, produced the effect. It is a small laboratory finding. Whether consumer headbands reproduce the timing has not been tested in controlled trials.

Rhythm And Movement

A steady external beat gives the motor system a timing cue to lock onto. In Parkinson's disease the internal timing of movement is impaired, so walking to a metronome or to music partly bypasses the fault. Pooling 50 studies with 1,892 participants, rhythmic auditory cueing raised walking speed and lengthened stride while lowering cadence, the step rate. That means fewer, longer steps that cover more ground, a standard tool in movement rehabilitation. The gain is in how a person walks; it does not slow or reverse the disease.

How it works

In plain terms

In plain terms

In plain terms

Measured in: 33 healthy volunteers in a single double-blind crossover pilot. What could explain it instead: A single small pilot with mostly non-significant outcomes and no replication; any calming music lowers heart rate, so the design cannot attribute the change to the tuning, not to the listening.. A calming piece of music slows the heart whatever its exact pitch, so a small heart-rate change does not isolate the tuning as the cause. Relaxation, expectation and the music itself are the plainer explanations, and no controlled evidence supports the disease claims made for specific frequencies.

Where The Evidence Runs Out

Healing frequencies. Tuning music to 432 Hz instead of the standard 440 Hz, or playing specific Solfeggio tones, has not been shown to have a particular health effect. The one double-blind comparison played the same music at each tuning to 33 healthy volunteers. It found a small drop in heart rate with 432 Hz, about 4.8 bpm, and no significant change in blood pressure or breathing. A calming piece of music slows the heart at any pitch, so that small dip does not single out the tuning as the cause.

The specific disease claims made for particular frequencies have no controlled support.

Whole-body vibration as a cure. Vibration plates have small trials for bone density in postmenopausal women and for muscle strength in older adults, and that is the extent of it. The claim that a vibration frequency detoxifies the body or rebalances an illness is a different claim, and it does not rest on controlled data.

Frequency devices for disease. Machines that promise to destroy pathogens or treat serious illness with radio frequencies do not deliver enough energy to do what is claimed. No controlled data supports the disease claims.

Common Questions

What is the resonance frequency of the heart?

It is the breathing rate at which the heart's rhythm swings the widest, near six breaths a minute for most people. At that rate the breath falls into step with the baroreflex, the loop that adjusts heart rate to blood-pressure changes on a period near ten seconds. Your own rate runs a little slower if you are tall, roughly between five and seven breaths a minute. Breathing there is the most direct way to drive heart rate variability up.

Is there anything to healing frequencies like 432 Hz?

The specific health claims have not held up in controlled testing. Music you enjoy is relaxing, and that benefit holds at any tuning.

Can sound or light really change the brain?

Yes, and in a measurable way. A rhythmic stimulus that repeats steadily pulls populations of neurons into step with it, seen in animal recordings and in human EEG. Whether a given rhythm helps a given condition is a separate matter. Two examples show how early it still is: 40 Hz light and sound in Alzheimer's disease, and sound timed to slow-wave sleep, both active research lines.

How does light set my body clock?

The clock runs slightly longer than 24 hours, so without a daily signal it drifts out of time, and light is that signal. In practice, get bright light early and keep it dim late in the evening, and sleep holds its schedule.
