Exposure: Grounding en earthing

My Plan

Findings & Outcomes

What It Is

Grounding, also called earthing, is direct skin contact with the surface of the earth. That means standing barefoot on grass, soil or sand, or lying on a conductive mat or sheet wired to a building's ground.

From that one physical fact the marketing reaches to four health claims: relief for inflammation, chronic pain, poor sleep and low mood. The connection itself is easy to measure. Whether it produces any of those four effects is not.

Anatomy of the Practice

1The idea

Bare skin meets the earth: grass, soil, wet sand, or a conductive mat wired to ground. The idea is that free electrons pass into the body and neutralize the reactive molecules that drive inflammation.

2What is measured

The studies track two kinds of thing: markers read from a machine or a blood sample, and outcomes a person reports, such as sleep and pain. The groups are small, roughly ten to forty people, and mostly unblinded.

3The gap

A machine can measure a shift in a marker, but that is not a change you would notice. Showing a route is possible does not show it happens. No trial has tested grounding under good blinding, and no independent lab has repeated the work. That is the open question.

What It Does

One grounding result was tested more carefully than the rest: the mood finding is the only outcome measured double-blind and against a sham. Every other health claim rests on a weaker design.

The evidence splits into two grades of very different strength. The immediate electrical signals are solid. The reported health outcomes are preliminary. The findings, strongest first:

  • Immediate electrical signals are the least disputed. The instant skin meets the earth, skin conductance and several autonomic readings shift. That change shows a connection has been made.
  • The mood result is the best-designed outcome, and the only one run double-blind and sham-controlled.
  • Sleep, muscle soreness and blood-cell clumping are weaker: each came from a single group with no comparison. The blood-cell change is a lab measurement; you would not notice it.

The outcome studies share two weaknesses. The samples are small, most 10 to 40 people, and rarely well blinded. Most also come from one research group whose members disclose financial ties to companies selling grounding products. Disclosure does not make a finding wrong. The same numbers would count for more from several independent labs. Taken together, the trials are an early hint. They have not reached the bar of a proven treatment.

Sleep

In plain terms

In detail

Measured in: 12 adults with sleep, pain and stress complaints, sleeping grounded for roughly eight weeks.

Who this may not transfer to:The study does not break its small sample down by sex; grounding physiology has not been tested at a scale that would show whether the effect differs between men and women.

Pain

In plain terms

In detail

Measured in: A small pilot group of eight healthy men (ages 20-23) put through a sore-muscle protocol, grounded or sham-grounded.

Who this may not transfer to:The authors' own review reports the eight participants were healthy men aged 20 to 23, so the pilot's result is untested in women; grounding physiology has not been studied at a scale that would reveal sex differences.

Mood & stress

In plain terms

In detail

Measured in: 40 adults in a double-blind, sham-controlled single session.

Who this may not transfer to:The report does not give a sex breakdown for the effect; whether the mood change differs by sex has not been tested.

How it works

In plain terms

In detail

Measured in: 10 healthy adults, blood measured before and after a single two-hour grounding session.

Who this may not transfer to:The ten-person sample is not reported by sex in a way that transfers; the blood measure has not been studied at a scale that would reveal sex differences.

In plain terms

In detail

Measured in: A small sham-controlled study measuring autonomic signals during grounding.

Who this may not transfer to:The study enrolled fourteen men and fourteen women; these are immediate electrical signals, not an outcome expected to differ by sex.

Measured in: Narrative reviews summarizing the grounding literature and its proposed mechanism.

Oschman JL, Chevalier G, Brown R. The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases · J Inflamm Res 2015;8:83-96

How It Works

The proposed mechanism is electrical. The earth's surface sits at a mildly negative potential. The claim is that skin contact lets electrons flow into the body, where they act as antioxidants and calm the low-grade inflammation behind many chronic conditions. It is a specific, testable idea.

At the moment of grounding, only the electrical connection can be measured. The potential at the body surface changes, and skin conductance shifts. Those readings are the most solid part of the picture, because they follow directly from completing a circuit.

Past that point the picture is unsettled. A change at the skin shows the connection exists. It does not show anything inside the body improved. The movement of antioxidant electrons through the whole body, the step that would turn a connection into lower inflammation, has not been demonstrated. The mechanism has been described in far more detail than it has been tested.

Trying It

For most people the whole practice is the free outdoor version, and it rests on stronger evidence than the electron theory. Walking barefoot on grass or sand puts a person outdoors, moving and in daylight. Time in nature, walking and morning light each carry solid evidence of their own. The claim that earth contact eases inflammation rests on weak, conflicted data and grades as preliminary.

Barefoot time outside is low-risk, and it comes with practices that are well supported whatever the electrons are doing.

Ways to Do It

The free outdoor version is the whole practice for most people, and it is the pleasant, well-supported part. The indoor version brings the same connection inside; its evidence is preliminary and comes largely from sources that sell the products.

1
Stand or walk barefoot on the earthFreeEasy

Take your shoes off on grass, bare soil or sand for a while. Damp ground and wet sand conduct better than dry, if you want to match what the studies used. This is the free version of grounding, and it is also simply time outdoors, which carries its own well-supported benefits regardless of the electron theory.

2
Pair it with things that are well evidencedFreeEasy

Take the first few barefoot minutes on the lawn with your morning coffee, and you get grounding, a dose of morning light and a moment outside at once. Route a barefoot stretch into a walk on grass or a beach. Walking, daylight and nature are the parts with the strongest evidence, and a barefoot start folds all three together.

3
Time by water and on the beachFreeModerate

Wet sand and seawater are good conductors, so a barefoot walk along the tideline is the outdoor setting grounding enthusiasts favor most. It also delivers a longer walk and time in nature, so it is a pleasant way to try the idea with nothing bought and nothing to plug in.

4
An indoor grounding mat or sheet, if you want to test the idea$Easy

A conductive pad, sheet or wrist strap connects you to earth indoors. The do-it-yourself route wires the pad to a rod pushed into soil outside; a bought version plugs into the round ground pin of a wall socket. This is what the indoor trials used, and the evidence for it is preliminary and largely from sources that sell such products. Read the wiring caution below before plugging anything into a socket.

Go Deeper

  • Time in nature: the large, well-supported evidence on green space and going outside: most of what a barefoot walk delivers.
  • Walking: the part of a barefoot outdoor session with the strongest evidence of its own.
  • Morning light: the daylight you get standing outside in the morning, and how it sets the body clock.
  • Your sleep environment: the changes to where you sleep that have better evidence behind them than a grounding sheet.

Cautions For This Practice

Extra restraint

Everything to be aware of is here, in one place. This practice suits most healthy people; a few situations call for real care.

Not a substitute for medical care

Grounding is marketed for inflammation, chronic pain, poor sleep and more, on evidence that is still preliminary. If you have a diagnosed condition, treat grounding as an addition, keep taking what a clinician has prescribed, and see a doctor for symptoms that persist or worsen. Nothing here is a reason to delay treatment.

Indoor mats, household wiring and implanted devices

A grounding mat or sheet ties your body to the electrical ground of the building. If the socket is miswired or the ground path is faulty, that connection could in principle carry a fault voltage to you, so have any doubtful wiring checked by an electrician, or use a mat earthed to a rod outdoors instead of the wall socket. Anyone with a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or other electronic implant should ask their cardiologist before using an electrically connected product.

Barefoot outdoors, the ordinary hazards

The risks of going barefoot are ordinary: cuts, splinters, glass, thorns, sharp stones and hot surfaces. People with diabetes or nerve damage in the feet can injure a sole without feeling it, and a small wound there can turn serious, so they should be especially careful and usually keep protective footwear. Watch where you step, and clean and cover any break in the skin.

Cold, damp and poor circulation

Long contact with cold, wet ground chills the body and stiffens the joints, and the risk is higher for older adults and anyone with Raynaud phenomenon, peripheral vascular disease or a heart condition. Favor warm, dry ground and keep sessions short in cold weather.

The paid products and the evidence

Grounding is sold with strong claims across a range of products, from sheets to mats to footwear. The barefoot version costs nothing and is the part most worth doing. The evidence behind the paid products is still preliminary and carries a conflict of interest, most of it from the one group that both studies and sells them.

Start slow, be smart, read the research, and consult a professional if you have any concerns. This is here to inform your choice, not make it for you.

Common Questions

Does grounding actually reduce inflammation?

The proposed route is that electrons from the earth neutralize the reactive molecules behind inflammation, and it is a plausible hypothesis. The human evidence is a small set of trials, most from a single group with product ties, and they track markers more than symptoms a person would feel. On its own the inflammation claim grades as preliminary. Barefoot time outdoors is free and pleasant for much simpler reasons.

Do I need a grounding mat, or is barefoot enough?

Barefoot on grass, soil or wet sand is the same earth connection, and it costs nothing. A mat or sheet exists to bring that connection indoors, and it is what the indoor studies actually used, so it has a real basis. The evidence for the indoor product is preliminary and comes largely from sources that sell it. The simplest way to try the idea is shoes off, outside.

Is there any harm in trying it?

Outdoors the hazards are the plain ones: glass, splinters and hot ground, with extra care if diabetes or neuropathy means you might not feel a foot injury. Indoors, a mat ties you to the building's electrical ground, so have doubtful wiring checked and ask your cardiologist first if you have a pacemaker or other implant. For most people the barefoot version is about as risky as a walk in the park.

Is grounding science or marketing?

Some of both. Small trials do record measurements: skin conductance shifting within seconds, blood cells clumping a little less, and reports of better sleep and mood. Those trials are small, rarely well blinded, and concentrated in one group of authors with product ties. The electron-transfer mechanism has not been shown at the scale that would settle it. Graded grounding is preliminary: genuinely interesting, and not yet strong enough for the confident marketing claims.
